Popular streamer DrDisrespect is working on its own shooter that relies on NFTs and a controversial blockchain system. Not everyone is thrilled.
With his own video game Deadrop DrDisrespect wants to shake up the shooter genre. To do so, the popular streamer relies on NFTs and a controversial blockchain systemamong other things, which is causing mixed feelings even in his own community.
However, DrDisrespect refuses to be swayed by the vocal criticism. Instead, he continues to tout the NFT model of Deadrop and Loot, which is said to be worth up to $100,000. This, in turn, is causing even more criticism.
DrDisrespects Deadrop
What is Deadrop supposed to be anyway? DrDisrespect wants to launch a PvPvE shooter with Deadrop, in which 60 to 100 players go into battle at the same time. We will mainly fight over (allegedly) valuable loot, for which Deadrop relies on NFTs and cryptocurrencies – a model that has been the focus of heated discussions in recent months, or still is.
What is the NFT controversy all about? DrDisrespect already unveiled his shooter in the summer of 2022 – and there was already criticism for Deadrop. Especially considering the discreetly confident statement that every screenshot of the game would look better than any Call of Duty
. But even at this point, Deadrop’s plans to rely on non-fungible tokens were not exactly met with cheers and shouts of joy.
NFT discussion reignited
DrDisrespect continues to hold forth on NFTs:Now DrDisrespect has reignited the discussion by expressing his excitement towards the blockchain model for Deadrop. Specifically, DrDisrespect wrote on Twitter:
Just imagine extracting an item you discovered that is worth $100,000 on the blockchain. Just imagine the entertainment value for the audience, but more importantly for the player. A new kind of PvP experience awaits.
Incidentally, DrDisrespect has clear words for the criticism of the NFT concept, and in some cases only insults. For example, the streamer adds on Twitter:
[…] People who write fraud or [respond with] Ugh [are] just brain-dead headline followers. These same people spend oodles on skins in annual game releases. For the same skins that everyone else has.
Imagine trying to ‘extract’ with an item you discovered worth $100,000 on the chain.
Think about entertainment value as a viewer let alone player.
A new pvp experience is upon us…

Even DrDisrespect fans criticise this: The information is not very well received by his followers. Numerous users criticise, for example, the high risk of fraud, the damage to the environment and the potential for abuse through money laundering that NFTs entail. We have collected a few meaningful reactions for you as follows:
People are saying it’s a scam because all reasonable questions as to why you think it isn’t a scam are ignored. There’s legitimately been 0 explanation as to why NFT’s is a good (and safe) thing for gamers.
Do some due diligence and PR if you want it to be accepted. 🤷 https://t.co/fxF1YL7vgn

Imagine winning money in a video game. Except it’s not money it’s a digital asset that is probably not actually worth anything now and will definitely not be worth anything later pic.twitter.com/n5Wpxj5Fkh

Can’t wait to see your anti cheat if you truly think we as players can extract with items worth 100K.
Don’t get me wrong, I want to see Deadrop succeed. Tying it to crypto like this? I have a bad feeling. https://t.co/UP2nYOsxJO

Ugh NFT/blockchain gaming? I thought you were better than that. Was looking forward to your game, should’ve known better when you dropped exclusive NFT tokens for it lol.

Of course, the discussion is not entirely one-sided In the responses below the post, there are numerous supporters and advocates of NFTs and blockchain technology for Deadrop or indeed overall. Partly from loyal DrDisrespect fans, partly from developers of entirely original NFT games.
Happy to see this concept (slowly) permeating into the wider gaming space, slowly but surely.
A concept and technical advancements in our projects games at AlwaysGeeky Games, that we have been championing for the past 2+ years, happy to finally see the tide starting to turn.
