Yesterday afternoon, Funcom held a quarter-hour showcase for Dune: Awakening. The stream not only showed a featurette on the production of the MMO, but also the first gameplay scenes.

Since the announcement in 2022 Funcom has held back on information about Dune: Awakening. But as the release of Dune: Part 2 approaches, the development studio wants to show what has long lain dormant under the sands of production. That’s why they revealed the first footage of the upcoming survival MMO in yesterday’s livestream. If you want, you can watch the stream here:

In the “Survive Arrakis” trailer embedded above, Funcom shows us its interpretation of the hostile desert planet with all its dangers, such as the colossal sandworms.

In order to survive in this unreal world, players must gather materials, build a base and set off on dangerous exploration missions. They can also learn deadly techniques from the schools of the Empire. This is the only way to go from bare survival to dominance.

In keeping with the sandy wasteland, the gameplay will be based primarily on sandbox mechanics, giving players the greatest possible freedom to explore Dune: Awakening in their own way.

Dune: Awakening – From book, to movie, to game

In addition to the gameplay trailer, Funcom has also released a featurette on Dune: Awakening. In it, Joel Bylos, Funcom’s Creative Director, and Greig Fraser, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part 1 and 2, talk about the creative intersection between film and game.

Here you can see some scenes from the movie and game and take a look behind the scenes of the production.

Dune: Awakening will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on an as yet unknown release date. Interested parties can already register for the beta on the official website

The upcoming MMO is not Funcom’s only Dune project. The studio has already worked on Dune: Spice Wars as a publisher together with Shiro Games.
