The new Adventure Mode transforms Dwarf Fortress into a massive open-world role-playing game in which you explore mythical dungeons, create your own heroes and shape the history of your world.

This is what many fans of the construction masterpiece Dwarf Fortress have been waiting for: the long-awaited Adventure Mode is finally here, transforming the colony simulation into a fascinating open-world role-playing game that can surpass many other games in terms of freedom and depth of detail.

What is Adventure Mode?

Adventure Mode allows you to experience the world of Dwarf Fortress from the perspective of a single adventurer. Instead of managing a settlement as in Fortress Mode, you design a hero – or antihero – and plunge headfirst into the procedurally generated sandbox.

You can choose from dozens of different races: explore the world as a drunken dwarf, an elegant elf, a normal human, or even an exotic creature such as a squirrel man, a weasel-like creature, or a goblin.

Your goal? There is no actual goal. Dwarf Fortress stays true to its philosophy of giving you maximum freedom: Whether you explore mythical dungeons, hunt treasure, forge your own legend or just spread chaos is entirely up to you.

Adventure Mode Features

  • Exploring without limits: You can visit each civilization, gain fame and recruit followers to join you on your adventure.
  • Mythical Dungeons: New, procedurally generated dungeons offer all kinds of magical treasures – and thus a first glimpse of future content that, according to the developers, will integrate mythology and magic even more closely.
  • Quest Log: Fill your journal with all kinds of tasks – save kidnapped children or take on groups of bandits.
  • New soundtrack: Adventure Mode also features an hour of new music, composed by Dabu and Simon Swerwer, which was released as the second part of the original soundtrack.

What also makes Adventure Mode special is the way it is closely linked to the game world you have already created. Events from the world of your Fortress Mode games have a direct impact on Adventure Mode. Was your settlement destroyed by a horde of goblins? Then you can visit them in Adventure Mode, seek revenge, and possibly retrieve lost treasures.

But even the death of your character is not the end. Your heroic or atrocious deeds will be immortalized in the history of the world: Bards might sing songs of your exploits, and sculptors might create statues.

To celebrate the release of Adventure Mode, Dwarf Fortress is currently available on Steam at a 20 percent discount (23 instead of 29 euros).
