Magic Spells in Elden Ring: What are Incantations, Sorceries, Dragon Spells? We explain the differences and give tips on how to use them.
Spells and invocations are like most things in Elden Ring: Damn hard to figure out because they’re pretty complicated. That’s why we summon our Guide Fireball and shed some light on them!

Sorceries
What are Sorceries? Sorceries rely on your Intelligence attribute and require a wand to cast them. Depending on the scroll you use, they offer a wide range of spells from the classic fireball to powerful meteor rain to a horde of spirit creatures.
Where do you get them? As an Astrologer, you will be able to cast the Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Arc spells right from the start. However, you will find numerous other spells in the game world of Elden Ring that you can also cast with a staff with all other classes.
Very important: You also need a teacher to teach them to you. These merchants will also sell them to you. Early in the game you can find the sorceress Sellen near the waypoint at the ruins.
How do you use them? Once you have learned the spells, you can equip them via the top control pad quick menu. The spells consume focus points as well as a little bit of stamina when you cast them.
Strong Spell for Beginners: Early in the game, you can buy the spell Glintstone Pebble from Sellen. The astrologer even has the magic projectile from the beginning. With it you can work on single enemies and also attack bosses from a distance.
Calls (Incantations)
What are Incantations? Incantations is Elden Ring magic that is available to non-staff users. It relies on the Faith attribute and you use it to cast miracles that resemble classical magic.
Where can you get them? You can find many of the miracles at special merchants, for example Brother Cortyn. You will meet him in the Round Table Fortress, which you will visit for the first time in the time slot around the first boss fight against Margit. Brother Cortyn will give you your first healing wonders, resistances and attack wonders.
Good to know: To unlock more wonders, you have to bring prayer books to the merchants. One of them, the Assassin’s Prayer Book, is located directly in the Round Table Fortress behind three magical barriers, for which you need three Stone Sword Keys.
How do you use them? Instead of a magic wand you need a Holy Seal for the miracles, which you can buy for example from the twin virgins in a side corridor of the Round Table Fortress. Equip the sigil and teleport to a place of grace. There you still have to activate the spell before you can work miracles.
Strong Invocation for Beginners: The Flame Sling miracle lets you hurl flames at enemies from afar and is a solid combat skill for humble beginnings in Elden Ring.
Dragon Spells
What are Dragon Spells? Dragon Spells are powerful spells that let you cast the magic of dragons. To obtain them, you must consequently defeat dragons. If you are brave, you can try this relatively early in the game.
Where do you get them? The first dragon Agheel is already waiting in Limgrave, the starting area of Elden Ring. Just move to the big lake near the starting point (marker 1), and stay in the Dragon-burnt Ruins for a few minutes. The dragon will reveal itself. Preferably defeat it on horseback! Therefore, you should have activated at least a few places of grace beforehand, until your maiden gives you the horse Torrent. Once you have brought down the winged monster, collect its dragon heart.
Use it to go to a cave on the coast (marker 2), equip a torch and cross the dark place. Be careful: A boss fight awaits you in the middle. Once you have finished it, you will reach the Church of Dragon Communion. Near a dragon corpse you will find a shrine where you can exchange your captured dragon heart for a dragon spell.
How do you use it? Dragon spells are learned in Elden Ring at places of grace, similar to invocations. Once internalised, you can select the Dragon Spell in battles via the top quick select bar and sizzle your enemies.
Strong Dragon Spell for Beginners: For starters, Dragonfire and Dragon Claw are suitable for you – depending on which type of attack you prefer. While Dragonfire scorches everything in front of you and controls weaker groups of opponents well, Dragonclaw helps especially in boss fights, as it briefly upsets the thick hunks when hit.
