The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is a short film about Miles Morales, which is dedicated to the topic of mental health

By the time Beyond the Spider-Verse is released, you may still have to tear off a few calendar pages. The film was originally scheduled to be released on March 28, 2024, but the finale of the trilogy about Miles Morales has since been postponed indefinitely.

Nevertheless, Spider-Man is now returning with a new short film that you can watch for free. Where? On YouTube, but you don’t have to open a new tab and search. You’ve got us, there you go:

What’s The Spider Within about?

The storyboard artist responsible for the short film, Jarelle Dampier, drew on his personal experiences, which is why The Spider Within is primarily about fear

Miles Morales is increasingly suffering from the strain of being a superhero and suddenly has panic attacks that trigger nightly visions of horror. As Spider-Man, he tries to fend off these nightmarish creatures.

Jarelle Dampier himself suffered from panic attacks and anxiety while working on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He describes his short film as dark, scary and bizarre and as Spider-Man-atypical

First reactions are positive

We’ve also taken a look at the initial reactions below the video and on the worldwide web. So far, The Spider Within has been extremely well received as a little spider snack for in between – often precisely because of its serious background theme

Or as YouTube user FrostZTX aptly put it:

And remember, folks, sanity is just as important as saving the entire multiverse. Protect yourselves!

The user rishimulchandani5049 expresses himself in the same direction and praises:

The movie] is so good – it shows that even superheroes have problems. It reminds me of Tony Stark, who also has panic attacks [in Iron Man 3].

And noobthenewt1048 can’t resist a medium-heavy sideswipe at two other Sony masterpieces:

This short 6-minute movie was somehow better than Madame Web and Morbius combined.

We may not be the friendly neighborhood spider, but we’re still here to help. In the box above, we have prepared not one, not two, but three articles worth reading about Marvel for you. With great power comes great responsibility and we don’t shy away from it!
