The PlayStation 5 Pro still works with PSSR as an upscaler – next year, an evolution based on FSR 4 will be integrated.
Last week, AMD not only launched the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, but also released FSR 4. Developed as part of “Project Amethyst,” this upscaling generation is the first to use machine learning.
The cooperation partner within Project Amethyst is Sony: Last fall, the Japanese company released its own upscaling version, called “PSSR” (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which is available exclusively for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
As Mark Cerny, PlayStation Lead System Architect, has now confirmed to Digital Foundry, FSR 4 will be released in a slightly modified form for the PS5 in the coming years. Sony therefore sees the new generation as “the next evolutionary step of PSSR”
- According to Cerny, “something very similar to FSR 4 should be available on the PS5 Pro” by 2026. The PS5 chief architect envisages that “the same inputs will be used and basically the same outputs produced”.
- However, there will be system-related differences between the FSR 4 available on the PC and the PS5 version of the upscaler, which arise from the different frame rate targets between the platforms.
According to Cerny, the initial focus this year is on further integrating PSSR into more PS5 games.
Because implementing the revised upscaling will take time, which is why FSR 4 has not yet made it onto the Sony console – however, the developers have already started setting up “a new neural network” on the PS5 Pro.
At the same time, the collaboration between Sony and AMD within Project Amethyst is also progressing.
Cerny doesn’t go into detail during the DF interview, but the focus is likely to remain on features such as path tracing and ray reconstruction, which are coming within reach thanks to the advances made in AI upscaling.
