In the course of a Q&A, the developers behind Exodus have revealed a lot more about the story, world and decisions of the Mass Effect competitor

How long we have to wait for Mass Effect 5 is written in the stars – or is hidden behind mass relays. Fortunately, however, there is another title in development that plans to fill this gap in 2024: Exodus

In the course of a Q&A, the developers have now revealed some more details about the science fiction role-playing game.

Companions, time dilation and inspirations

If you are interested in the complete Q&A session as a video, please visit the (official YouTube channel of Archetype Entertainment) here. We summarize the key information for you below:

  • The main character will be fully voiced
  • The game should allow freedom of exploration, it should by no means be linear.
  • The developers promise to place a lot of emphasis on the ending and the influence of decisions made during the course of the game.
  • Like at the beginning of Mass Effect, humans are in the role of a weaker species on the galactic stage.
  • Inspirations include Interstellar, Dune and past IPs that members of the team have worked on: for example: Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars and Dragon Age.

Location and science

The Omega Centauri star cluster will serve as the game location. This is a real existing structure within the Milky Way that is around 12 billion years old. With a diameter of around 150 light years and around 10 million stars, it is the most massive globular cluster in the Milky Way.

There are about 17,000 light years between us and there. If you want to know more, have a look here on Wikipedia. The developers chose this area for Exodus because it is an ancient region of our galaxy. This and other special features of the region will be important for the game.

Time dilation: The drama of traveling at extremely high speeds lies behind one big word. If you move quickly, time passes more slowly. Who discovered it? Einstein! And in Exodus, this aspect, which has always been ignored in games or bypassed thanks to alternative technology (subspace, warp, hyperspace…), is to become an important pillar of the storytelling.

What do you think about Exodus? Do you like the developers’ approach and does the initial gameplay seem coherent to you? Is it a good idea to take into account the consequences of extremely fast travel that are anchored in physics? Or are you worried that it might turn out chaotic and overly confusing?
