Fading Skies aims to combine modern features with nostalgic flair. Will it work? You can see for yourself thanks to the demo

Close your eyes and imagine: It’s Friday. School’s out, you run home, throw your satchel in the nearest corner and switch on your PlayStation 2 or Gamecube. A few minutes later, you’re immersed in your game, plunged into a strange world

This is exactly the feeling Fading Skies wants to bring back. Whether this will work is still written in the stars. But we can already tell you everything you need to know about the fantasy role-playing game. And if you like what you’re about to read, here’s a bonus:There’s a free Steam demo to try out for yourself!

Save the world – with a little dragon!

Fading Skies is being developed by the small indie studio Distant Blue. In the game, you take on the role of the heroine Ryn, who wants to save her fantasy world, which is on the brink of collapse. But she doesn’t have to trudge through the open world alone. She has a cute dragon at her side, which has its own set of skills

Ryn herself also learns new magical abilities and improves her existing skills over the course of her journey. There are mountains, forests, vast valleys and, of course, dark caves and dungeons to explore, as well as the above-ground ruins of an ancient civilization connected to Ryn’s own past.

In terms of gameplay, you can expect familiar genre fare, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. You travel the huge world, explore, fight all kinds of monsters and become stronger. So Fading Skies won’t win any innovation awards, but the aim is more to evoke nostalgic feelings of earlier gaming days anyway, and the developers seem to be on the right track here.

Little trivia fact:Two people are behind the developer Distant Blue.A married couple are working together on their role-playing dream. We think that Fading Skies is particularly visually impressive.

Test yourself without technical hurdles

Not only does the gameplay of Fading Skies scream oldschool, you can also expect a pleasantly undemanding game on a technical level. You don’t need a powerful computer, just 8 GB of RAM and an ancient graphics card like a Geforce GTX 770 will suffice

If you would like to try out the demo of Fading Skies, you can download iton Steamhere. The role-playing game does not yet have a release date, so it might be a while yet

On the crowdfunding platformKickstarterthe couple is still collecting funds to continue financing the project. So if you like what you see, you can still get involved. Currently, over 20,000 euros have already been raised
