In Far Cry 6 there is a mini-game in which we fight cockfights in the style of Tekken, Street Fighter and Co. This is causing criticism from the animal protection organisation PETA.

Far Cry 6 is currently facing criticism from the animal rights organisation PETA. The reason for this is the presentation of cockfights as a mini-game in which two roosters compete against each other in a duel. The staging is strongly reminiscent of fighting games such as Tekken, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

PETA vs. cockfighting in Far Cry 6

What exactly is it? In Far Cry 6, players can find various roosters in the fictional island state of Yara, which is based on Cuba, and have them compete against each other in the course of a mini-game. As in classic fighting games, the animals have various attack and evasion manoeuvres and must bring their opponent’s life bar down to zero in up to three rounds before time runs out.

Cockfighting is an optional mini-game in Far Cry 6.

And this is exactly where PETA Latino sees the problem: In the statement on the official website of the animal rights organisation, the mini-game is described as reprehensible and equated with the glorification of violence against animals. PETA is now demanding that Ubisoft replace or remove the mini-game.

On Twitter PETA Latino also argues that cruelty against animals is not part of Latin American culture and that the depiction of cockfighting in Far Cry 6 is racist and speciesist. By the latter, according to Wikipedia, is meant the moral discrimination of living beings solely on the basis of their species affiliation.

This is not the first time that Ubisoft has faced criticism from PETA: Already with Far Cry 5, the animal rights organisation condemned fishing and called the mini-game a glorification of violence against fish. In Animal Crossing, too, fishing for fish and catching insects were criticised as gameplay features.

In the past, there have been comparable cases denouncing, for example, fur clothing in games in the Warhammer universe or the milking mini-game of 1-2 Switch.
