Tokyo Game Show 2021

There were many upcoming games and world premieres at the Tokyo Game Show. We show you the highlights that will also be released on PC.

With the Tokyo Game Show Online 2021one of the biggest gaming events of the year once again took place purely digitally last weekend. As with every major trade fair, there were once again heaps of information, new announcements and world premieres from major publishers such as Capcom, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Konami and more.

Here we show you the most important announcements for PC gamers at the event, which is rather console-heavy.

Stranger of Paradise

We wouldn’t be surprised if this game has completely passed you by so far. Square Enix is currently not only working on Final Fantasy 16, but also on an action-packed spin-off to the very first Final Fantasy called Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

There was not only a new trailer, but also finally a release date: On 18 March 2022, the role-playing game will appear on the next-gen consoles and on the PC. As has now been announced, however, for the time being it will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. How long this will last and when the title will be playable on Steam was not said.

Incidentally, if you own an Xbox Series or PlayStation 5, you can download a playable demo from the corresponding store, in which you can get a taste of Stranger in Paradise until 11 October 2021.

Wanted: Dead

One of the most exciting new announcements might be Wanted: Dead. The action game, which several ex-members of the developer studio Team Ninja are working on, showed some pretty cool gameplay in the trailer.

As a kind of cyborg policewoman, you fight your way through a futuristic Hong Kong and take out enemy soldiers with a mixture of katana close combat and targeted shots from a pistol. Especially the finishing moves seem to get pretty bloody when the protagonist lets the limbs of her enemies fly through the room.

A release for the PC has been confirmed, Wanted: Dead is scheduled for release sometime in 2022.

Forspoken

The open-world role-playing game Forspoken, which will also be released under the Square Enix label, has not shown a new trailer, but has revealed more about the magic system – in the first trailer, heroine Frey was only seen casting an explosion spell and enclosing an enemy in a water ball.

Magic will not only play a central role in the battles, but also when exploring the game world. There you will be able to cover great distances with the so-called Magic Parkour. With the help of spells, you can dash from place to place, cover great distances in the air or perform movements that are reminiscent of the bullet jumps from Warframe.

Dungeon Encounters

Just announced, the minimalist dungeon role-playing game Dungeon Encounters will be released on Steam on 13 October 2021.

The goal is to fight your way to the end of a hundred-level deep dungeon. Visually and in terms of gameplay, the whole thing looks very minimalist, because your party only moves through the dungeons on a kind of chessboard. The battles, which rely on the ATB system of the Final Fantasy games, also look rather functional.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean anything: the main game designer is, after all, Hiroyuki Ito, who was, among other things, the game director for various Final Fantasys, including the seventh part, which is probably the most popular to this day. So Dungeon Encounters could well be an insider’s tip.

Atelier Sophie 2

At the Tokyo Game Show, typical JRPGs in an anime look cannot be missing, of course. And Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is just such a game. The popular Atelier series, which is always about the fate of a young alchemist, is now getting another sequel.

After Atelier Ryza received a sequel at the beginning of 2021, Atelier Sophie will be the next to receive a second part. As typical for the series, you can expect turn-based battles with up to six party members and an elaborately staged story.

Release on Steam has been announced by developer Koei Tecmo for 22 February 2022.
