Borderlands has recently been released in US cinemas, but after the scathing reviews, it seems that almost nobody cares

This looks anything but good for Borderlands:While shooter fans will have to wait until August 22, 2024, the game adaptation by Eli Roth has already been released in the USA. Butafter the scathing reviewsvirtually no one is running to the cinemas, as a look at the current box office takings shows.

Borderlands is well on its way to becoming a massive flop

A report fromVarietysays that Borderlands only managed to bring in 8.8 million US dollars on its launch weekend in the USA alone. With the income from other countries where the film has already been released, Borderlands has a current box office total of17 million dollars worldwide

With big blockbusters, the first opening weekend is crucial, while the figures for any film usually drop off after that. By way of direct comparison: other moderately successful game adaptations such asAssassin’s CreedorHitmanfrom 2007 at least still achieved better figures on their respective release dates.

A disastrous result for Borderlands, especially considering the production costs:According toDeadlinethe film alone is said to have devoured a budget of around 115 million US dollars and cost an additional 30 million in marketing. At the moment at least, it doesn’t look like Borderlands will be able to recoup this amount

A flop with an announcement?

In view of the scathing criticism of the film, however, this result is not too surprising.Because the Borderlands film was not under a good star from the beginning:Shooting was actually completed in June 2021, but post-production was massively slowed down by the corona pandemic.

Eli Roth was then no longer available for the extensive reshoots and Tim Miller stepped in for him.It was not until 2024 that the first images and trailers appeared, which were anything but well received by game fans and moviegoers – the casting of well-known and popular characters alone caused a lot of criticism.

Press representatives tore Borderlands to shreds a few days ago:Currently, the film has an average score of a meagre 8 percent onRotten Tomatoes. Viewers are much more generous in comparison with 51 points. On Metacritica similarly gloomy picture emerges with 27 points.

OnAugust 22Borderlands will finally(?) launch in Germany. At that time, you can see for yourself what the movie has to offer – and what it doesn’t.
