Flying in Hogwarts Legacy: How the broom works

Even if you”re not the caretaker, you”ll have a broom at your fingertips in Hogwarts Legacy! We”ve got all the info on function, tuning and other models at your fingertips.

I was specifically ordered by my supervisor to preface this message with a sweeping joke. So that”s what I”m doing now.

With Hogwarts Legacy, you finally get to return to the wizarding school and you brought an extra broom for the occasion. Haha. But of course the broom isn”t really there to clean up the dust of the centuries in the corridors of the castle – that”s what Caretaker Filch is there for, after all. Or at least his predecessor from the 19th century, because the game takes us to an earlier version of the famous magic school.

But this also means that you can”t take a seat on the Nimbus 2000 or the Firebolt. You can only fly on older models, perhaps the Nimbus 1900 or so. In this article we explain exactly how this works and what the limits are. And take off!

How does the broom work in Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world role-playing game in which you can explore not only the wizarding school itself, but also large parts of the surrounding countryside. You can do this quite simply by walking or by hopping on your broom. The broom can be called at any time and instantly appears in the hand of your wizard or witch. There is no Accio animation or anything similar.

The broom is then controlled directly and can, as expected, sweep over sticks and stones and thus also cross gorges or rivers. You can see what this looks like in this video right at the beginning:

What are the restrictions?

While the broom is available at all times, it cannot carry you to maximum height indefinitely. Instead, it has a boost meter that empties rapidly once you reach a certain height, forcing you to dart around just above the ground again instead. Also, there will certainly be a limit when you reach the end of the Open World. Most likely, the broom will also not be available to you indoors and in dungeons.

Is there a fleet of vehicles for brooms?

In Hogwarts Legacy, your character has their own base in the Room of Requirement, which they can set up freely and where, for example, magical animal creatures are also cared for. However, there is no fleet of vehicles for your brooms. You only have access to one broom at a time and cannot simply equip another broom as in GTA. You are also not allowed to steal any – at least that”s what we think.

Are there any other brooms for sale?

It is still a little unclear what exactly the team has planned. For example, they have already commented on this (in this video) but at the same time some questions remain unanswered. According to this, it is not possible to buy new brooms. So you can”t replace your old mop with a Nimbus. However, it should be possible to buy new skins for your broom from a broom dealer in Hogsmeade.

The question here is whether your old model will then simply receive new decorations, or whether the entire broom, including stick and bristles, will change and then resemble a new broom.

Can I improve my flying broom?

Even though the skins are purely cosmetic, you can still upgrade your broom to have better stats. To do this, you”ll also need to visit Hogsmeade and the broom shop. Here you can complete quests for the broom merchant and help him with his broom research. This will unlock new bonuses for your broom. Exactly what these are is not yet completely known. Among other things, it will be possible to keep the boost active far up in the air for longer. You will probably also be able to fly faster.

Can I fall off my broom?

Likely there will be some form of mechanic that will allow your opponents to pull you off your broom. However, it is not entirely clear whether you can also fall to your death from your broom through inability. It seems rather unlikely. However, (said a voice actress of this), you could listen to her in Hogwarts Legacy getting: roasted by a dragon or falling off her broom to her death

Is there Quidditch?

Even though you can fly on your broom in the role-playing game, you won”t be allowed to play Quidditch matches. The sport has existed for several hundred years at the time of Hogwarts Legacy, but only plays a peripheral role, if at all. Whether there will be any post-release DLC to change that, we don”t know yet.

Are there alternatives to the broom?

Yes, there are! You may have already seen in screenshots that flying animals are also open as a transport option. So far, we know of griffins and thestrals, but the latter are only available if you buy the Deluxe Edition!

(You can only ride the creepy Thestrals if you pre-order the game or buy the DLC afterwards.)

Flying animals can also be summoned freely and hatch from a magical bag. Unlike the broom, the animals don”t have a boost, so they are a bit slower, but they can stay high in the air for much longer. By the way, you can also simply ride the animals like normal horses.
