Week after week, game after game: Once again, there’s a free title in the Epic Store. In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair you can relive the glory days of the jump&run genre. We’ll discuss who might like the game and who might rather yawn in disbelief here!

How long will the gift
be available? The promotion runs from 3 to 10 February 2022 at 17:00 each day, so if you grab Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair in that time frame, you get to keep it permanently. In order to do this, you will need an account on the Epic Store.

This is what Yooka-Laylee 2 is all about

Developer Playtonic is staffed by veterans from the golden days of platformers who worked on games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The founders were active at Rare back then, which created Battletoads and Donkey Kong Country, among others.

And these roots can also be felt in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. In a colourful 2.5D world, which shows certain similarities to Donkey Kong Country, you have to prove your jumping skills. You go on a journey as Yooka and Laylee, playing a dynamic duo of chameleon and bat. This tandem principle is also reminiscent of Donkey and Diddy Kong. However, Yooka-Laylee is a pure single-player title.

The trailer shows what the gameplay looks like:

On top of that, there’s an overworld in 3D that you explore from a bird’s eye view to uncover all kinds of secrets. The overall presentation is very playful, colourful and light-hearted.

Is this fun?

On (Metacritic), Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair achieves a good average of 81 points from 13 press reviews. However, a total of 64 users there only rate it with 6.2 out of 10 points. On (Steam), on the other hand, the game is very well received by customers: Here, 90 percent of 457 reviewers give it a positive vote.

For whom suitable?

Yooka-Laylee is great for a nostalgic emotional journey to the long-gone Jump&Run era. Those who loved Donkey Kong as a child will certainly feel at home in the platformer.

However, you really have to be in the mood for the cute, colourful style of Yooka-Laylee 2. But even if that doesn’t usually suit your taste, a change of pace might be worth it for a virtual change of scenery.

If the most you like to do is jump to avoid an approaching jump&run, you can safely let this week’s Epic gift pass you by.
