Like every week, new games are available for free on Thursday from Epic Games. This week, two survival games are free, and we guarantee you’ve never heard of them.

Every Thursday, Steam competitor Epic Games reshuffles the cards and distributes one or more free games. You can get the titles with a single click, and they will remain in your library forever. Epic’s long-term goal: to retain customers so as not to leave the whole cake in the digital gaming business to Steam.

In the second week of October, Epic’s two free games are all about survival Both Empyrion – Galactic Survival and Outliver: Tribulation are survival titles. While the former takes you to the depths of space, the second has you fighting horrific creatures from African mythology.

We reveal which games are worth playing for free.

Free game number 1: Empyrion – Galactic Survival

(Developer: Eleon Game Studios – Genre: Survival-Adventure – Release: August 2015)

Empyrion is aimed primarily at space fans and is somewhat reminiscent of No Man’s Sky The game follows the “abandoned in the wild” principle: you and your escape pod are stranded on a strange, randomly generated planet and have to fight for survival.

This means finding food, mining resources, crafting items from them in menus, building shelter, constructing vehicles and spaceships, then leaving the planet and exploring space. Along the way, you’ll pursue several quests told in text boxes that tell you more about the Empyrion galaxy.

The 2015 base game may be a few years old now, but it is still as popular as ever with gamers. On Steam, the game has around 80 percent positive reviews

On the other hand, we cannot recommend the Dark Faction add-on to you! Not only is it mostly negatively rated on Steam, but we also only gave it a 37 in our review. If you want to spice up the base game, you should rather resort to mods.

Free game number 2: Outliver: Tribulation

(Developer: Gbrossoft – Genre: Survival horror shooter – Release: July 2023)

Tribulation by Outliver is set not in space but deep underground In this third-person shooter from the Nigerian three-man studio Gbrossoft, you play a soldier who ends up in a supernatural burial chamber where monsters from African mythology are on the loose.

To escape, you must survive the trials of the warriors, an ancient ritual that sends hordes of enemies after you in the narrow and gloomy chambers. The gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Outlast.

What other games are free?

For the sake of completeness, we don’t want to withhold from you that there is also a permanent selection of free titles at GOG, CD Projekt’s games marketplace, including the first two The Elder Scrolls parts Daggerfall and Arena. It’s worth checking back regularly, especially if you’re a fan of retro gaming.
