For the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, gamescom 2022 will take place in Cologne again. And Opening Night Live is also finally showing its trailers and announcements in front of a live audience again. This year, presenter Geoff Keighley had over 30 games in his luggage!

If you don”t feel like clicking through all the game trailers, we”ve picked out the highlights of the evening for you here:

The 10 best trailers of the Opening Night Live 2022

Dead Island 2

(Genre: Action – Developer: Sumo Digital – Release: February 3, 2023)

That”s why it”s a highlight: For far too long there was no sign of life from the zombie game – yet development started back in 2014! But at ONL 2022 there were even two trailers to see.

While the render trailer gets us in the mood for the funky atmosphere of the game with funky music, it is the second surprise of the evening that deserves the spotlight: Because there is finally first gameplay from Dead Island 2 to see! Fast, bloody, wild – the trailer knows how to set the scene for the over-the-top zombie carnage.

The Callisto Protocol

(Genre: 3rd-person shooter – Developer: Striking Distance Studios – Release: December 2, 2022)

That”s why it”s a highlight: Everything about the trailer for The Callisto Protocol reminds us of Dead Space – and that”s a good thing! Here, too, we have to deal with terrifying creatures that lurk in the gloomy environments. The dense atmosphere is also accompanied by an eerily beautiful soundscape – the panting and shuffling of the monsters sends a shiver down our spines just watching them. Brrr.

Dune: Awakening

(Genre: Survival MMO – Developer: Funcom – Release: tba)

That”s why it”s a highlight: There wasn”t much to see in the trailer for the new survival MMO yet. However, fans of the epic may have already picked up some familiar details: For example, the litany of the Bene Gesserit, a spice harvester and, of course, the notorious sandworm. With its atmospheric scenes and epic music, the short teaser not only whets fans” appetites for more!

Atlas Fallen

(Genre: Action Role-Playing Game – Developer: Deck 13 – Release: 2023)

That”s why it”s a highlight: The German developer and The Surge maker is back with a new action RPG and a new IP. In the trailer for Atlas Fallen we get an atmospheric introduction to the story of the fantasy world, which is dominated by powerful gods.

In addition to atmospheric music, there are spectacular battles with unique sand magic to be seen. Gameplay was also shown and especially the sand surfing immediately makes you want to explore the semi-open world.

The Lords of the Fallen

(genre: action role-playing game – developer: CI Games – release: tba)

That”s why it”s a highlight: The mix of reboot and sequel to Lords of the Fallen was a real surprise at this year”s ONL. The trailer sets the mood for the Dark Fantasy Soulslike with great light and shadow effects, scary monster design, badass music and a cool staged battle

Lies of P

(Genre: Action Role-Playing Game – Developer: Round8 Studio – Release: 2023)

That”s why it”s a highlight: Little doll, my ass! In the Soulslike Lies of P, Pinocchio shows a completely new and dark side. The graphic style of the game is strongly reminiscent of a mixture of Bloodborne, Bioshock and Dishonored and takes us into an atmospheric steam-punk world. We also get a glimpse of the mechanical enemies, the variety of weapons and fast-paced battles. The trailer is a real eye-catcher!

Where Winds Meet

(Genre: Action RPG – Developer: Everstone Games – Release: tba)

That”s why it”s a highlight: The new action-adventure is set in the Song Dynasty and reminds of a mixture of Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima. The beginning of the trailer radiates a melancholic calm and the soft sounds of the singing seem almost meditative – until the beauty and serenity are interrupted by dark scenes, fights and destruction. An atmospheric trailer with a lot of Asian flair.

Moonbreaker

(Genre: Turn-based Strategy – Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment – Release: Sep 29, 2022)

That”s why it”s a highlight: The Subnautica makers presented at ONL probably one of the most curious trailers for their new game Moonbreaker, a strategy game with miniatures. In it, they breathe amazing life into the actually so rigid figures on the battlefield. You can even paint the little models yourself! A different take on Toy Story.

Goat Simulator 3

(Genre: Action Simulation – Developer: Coffee Stain Studios – Release: Nov 17, 2022)

That”s why it”s a highlight: Do we really need to explain much more about why this trailer is so worth watching? Just watch this chaotic fever dream for yourself!

Everywhere

(Genre: Action – Developer: Build A Rocket Boy – Release: 2023)

This is why it”s a highlight: no other trailer from ONL is surrounded by as much mystery as the one for the open-world game from the former GTA chief developer. But Everywhere has nothing whatsoever to do with GTA anymore. Instead, we can expect a kind of alternative digital reality in which players are offered a lot of freedom.

And now it”s your turn! What was your highlight of Opening Night Live? Which trailer from our list did you like best? And are you missing a game from our list? Let us know in the comments!
