While some players are still searching for their mount Stormwind, others are already teaching it to fly. However, the faithful steed is not likely to like this method.
The vast open world of Elden Ring is so vast and full of hidden secrets that you inevitably form a close bond with your mount Stormwind. Now resourceful players have found a way to teach the summonable quadruped to fly.
The glitch gives a whole new meaning to the expression “on horseback” and turns Stormwind into a true Pegasus. The horned horse might not like the way this transformation takes place, because in the first step it has to give up its life.
So far, two places in the game have been identified where the trick can be used. Streamer EZScape shows you the process in this short clip:
As you can already see from the video title, the speedrunning community in particular should be keeping a close eye on the flying horse.
The community recently set the fastest play-through time for Elden Ring at half an hour and, as we all know, never tires of trying to undercut each other.
But even for players who aren’t chasing records, it might be worth a try. Even if you don’t want to use it to leapfrog unwelcome opponents, a horse-drawn plane like this offers an unusual and sometimes very exciting perspective on the intermediate country.
Besides, the secret star of games like Elden Ring is the map anyway, and if you can’t wait to get to a certain place on it, then just fly there and have a look around!
That’s the way to fly
If you want to try flying yourself, you can do so in just a few steps. But make no mistake: it’s trickier than it looks!
This is how you can fly
If you want to try flying yourself, you can do so in just a few steps. But make no mistake: it’s trickier than it looks!
- Go to the Refuge of the Beasts or House Vulcan.
- Find one of the cliffs shown in the video.
- Ride so close to the edge that Stormwind comes into contact with the invisible game-over level after you jump off, at which point your character would also face crash death.
- Try summoning your steed again and confirm the use of a charge of Purple Tears.
- To make it actually appear, summon it a second time and enjoy flying!
In an even newer alternative method, you are not tied to these two locations and can theoretically perform the glitch on any sharp ledge with a deadly precipice next to it. It works like this:
- Jump off your horse and immediately quit the game while still in the air. When you return, it should now be standing next to you.
- Stand on a deadly cliff and throw yourself off. Finish the game before you die.
- If everything has worked, you will stand at the edge of the cliff after loading and Stormwind will fall.
- Proceed as before and call your now flying steed twice.
What this looks like is shown in this video by MrTurboMoose:
Still without a horse? This is how you get the mount
If you don’t have that many hours under your belt yet, you might still be running around on foot through the vastness of the intermediary land. But it is quite easy to get the little horse: After the tutorial, all you have to do is unlock three above-ground places of grace (i.e. save points) and stop at the third.
The ruins at the storm gate, for example, are one of the first places to go after the game releases you into the open world, but the order doesn’t really matter. If you rest at the third, you will be visited by Melina, who will not only allow you to level up, but will also give you the spectral whistle, which you can use to call Stormwind.
Put it on a shortcut key and enjoy your new mobility! Fortunately, you also mount immediately when you call your companion and it also has a handy double jump. Weapons can also be used from the horse’s back.
Now we hope you continue to enjoy exploring the in-between land, whether flying or hoofing it the classic way on the hard ground of the Souls facts.
