The new update for the PC version of God of War provides a small change so that you can swing the axe more accurately.
The dear Kratos is known to be very good at sinking his axe unerringly into the flesh of his opponents. In God of War, this also works without any problems on the PC – and it’s also a lot of fun, as our test shows you:
However, the inclined PC player may still turn up his nose when he massages a Draugr’s diaphragm for the first time: Because, as is common in many console ports, negative mouse acceleration is also at work in God of War. Until now, that is, because a new patch finally lets you gain full control over your working device – with a catch that you have to put up with for it.
Full precision, but an animation bug
After the installation, which should usually run automatically on Steam, the game version is 1.05 and opens up new control options. In the camera settings you will now find two possible modes, either Classic or Precision.
In classic mode, unsurprisingly, everything remains the same. When you look around with the mouse or want to take aim at an enemy, everything seems a little sluggish to enhance the cinematic presentation. Your movements are artificially slowed down. If this annoys you too much – after all, what’s a rodent with lots of DPI for – you can switch to the second mode.
The Precision setting deactivates the negative mouse acceleration, which should make it easier to control fights. The general feel of the game should also feel a little faster. But before Kratos turns the corner of his mouth into an almost euphoric grin, we have to throw a but into the room.
Some users report animation bugs that occur in precision mode. This makes Kratos look like a rather excited fidgeter, which can look unintentionally funny from time to time, but is of course annoying nonetheless. You can see the problem in this video, we have fast-forwarded to the relevant part for you:
It is not known what is causing the problem. However, it may have to do with an important note from the developers, which can be read in the (Patch Notes) and should be followed by you:
Additional fine-tuning can be done by adjusting the values in the settings.ini file located in the game’s installation directory. This mode should NOT be used in conjunction with the aiming aid.
A small ray of hope for AMD users
And what else does the patch bring? Mainly technical problems have been fixed. If you set the DLSS slider to 0, the feature is now really disabled. In addition, there are now fewer problems when you use the frameless full-screen mode.
Finally, the developers also address owners of an AMD graphics card who still have to struggle with performance losses. They have identified the problem and will now analyse it in order to develop a solution.
The bottom line is that God of War is still considered a particularly good console port in technical terms. Find out how much effort was put into making Kratos and Atreus change camps in our big report.
How does the game run on your system? Have you already tried the alternative control with deactivated mouse acceleration and if so, what was your experience with it? Feel free to write us about it in the comments!
