No excuses for lousy PC tech: For Cory Barlog, broken PC conversions are due to a lack of money and time.

The PC version of God of War is delighting PC gamers and journalists alike, on Steam the reviews are stellar. Also because the technology of the action adventure, which is outstanding in terms of gameplay, is enormously well done. But that is not a matter of course, as creative director Cory Barlog from developer Santa Monica Studio also knows.

“When developers are criticised for a poor PC port, they’ve probably been given a very small team and very little time. In my opinion, any game can be converted very well [to another platform, editor’s note] if you have the right expectations, plan properly and have the expertise. “

“But it also happens that the publisher says: ‘This is exactly the amount we are prepared to spend. This is the maximum amount of time you have for it.’ And that’s the platform we want the game on.’ Realistically, that’s probably not enough.”

With God of War, the developers benefited from the fact that, according to Barlog, they began experimenting with the technology on PC early in development, when God of War was still being developed as a PS4 exclusive title. This helped the creators with the later PC conversion. The result: God of War also turns out to be a masterpiece in the (PC test).

For Cory Barlog personally, developing on consoles has the advantage that the team can focus on a specific hardware configuration. The mass of variables in the different PC configurations brings with it a completely new range of error sources.
