God of War Ragnarök is being punished with lousy Steam reviews because Sony is making the same mistake as with Helldivers 2.
The highly acclaimed God of War Ragnarök has finally arrived on PC! This is actually a reason to be happy – after all, the action-adventure is considered one of the best video games of all time.
But the launch on Steam is not going as smoothly as many PC gamers had hoped.Because instead of progeny on a divine hunt for enemies, players are encountering a hurdle that has already caused massive criticism from the community in the case of Helldivers 2.
Annoyance over unnecessary PSN hurdles
Probably the biggest wave of criticism revolves around the mandatory PSN account:In order to play Ragnarök, players are forced to log in with a PSN account – even if they only bought the game on Steam.
For many, this requirement is incomprehensible, since God of War: Ragnarök is a single-player game. Especially those who have never owned a PlayStation find this unnecessary and annoying.
Some players even report massive difficulties in creating a PSN account In the United Kingdom, for example, age verification must be carried out by telephone or facial recognition.
There are numerous comments in the Steam reviews in which users express their displeasure:
I paid 60 euros for the game and I’m being forced to log into a system I never wanted to use
Oh, what a love for third-party collection of account data and unnecessarily increased security risks.
A PSN account requirement prevents me from playing on Linux or my Steam Deck. The PlayStation Runtime SDK won’t load or install.
Technical problems and performance issues
In addition to the annoyance of the PSN connection, many players have also had to deal with technical difficulties. While the 2018 predecessor is considered to be a technically stable PC port, Ragnarök seems to have weaknesses, especially in terms of performance.
Players report massive stutters and frame drops, even on powerful hardware. Others encounter problems with the VRAM limit, which is supposed to cause startup difficulties on devices with less than 6 GB of video RAM. In addition, there are various more exotic graphics issues: in one of the Steam reviews, a user writes that he can only start the game in a resolution of 1104×616.
The controls also cause frustration for several users. Many buyers report that the camera cannot be controlled with the mouse, but only with the arrow keys. For other players, gamepad support suddenly failed after some time in the game.
Despite these difficulties, the game itself continues to receive rave reviews. Almost all of the negative reviews on Steam are not related to the content of God of War: Ragnarök, but to the technical problems and the account requirement.
If you also bought the game on Steam: How is God of War Ragnarök going for you? Can you confirm the technical issues? How annoying is the PSN requirement? Let us know in the comments section.
