Geforce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will both be released in 2024 after all. This is our take on the rumor

There has been a lot of speculation recently about the release of Nvidia’s new graphics cards in the form of the RTX 5000. However, the rumors have been pointing in one direction: only the flagship RTX 5090 will be released in 2024

A current rumor, however, says that things will turn out differently

Why is this important?  If only the RTX 5090 were to be released this year, the interest of gamers in buying it would probably be manageable. This is because the top model is likely to reach similar or even higher price regions than the RTX 4090, which cost just under €2,000 at launch.

The RTX 5080, on the other hand, could manage the balancing act between high-end performance on the one hand and a barely affordable price on the other. A launch in 2024 would therefore be good news for gamers who want to upgrade their system

In detail: On May 6, the hardware magazine Techpowerup published a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter) stating that Nvidia would only launch the RTX 5090 in 2024, while the rest of the RTX 5000 series would be released in 2025. This confirms previous rumors and speculation

However, kopite7kimi, a well-known leaker in hardware circles, responded vehemently:

kopite7kimi writes: This is not true. RTX 5080 should be released first.

However, the leaker did not provide more details, such as a specific release date.

How do we assess the situation?

Which suggests that only the RTX 5090 will be released in 2024

The possible release period is difficult to estimate. There are good arguments in favor of only the RTX 5090 being released initially:

  • Speculation has recently intensified that AMD will not attack the high-end segment with the next generation of graphics cards and leave the field to Nvidia.
  • Without competition, Nvidia would not be forced to put all its cards on the table right away.
  • The RTX 5080 could come close to or even overtake the RTX 4090 in terms of performance. This would mean that Nvidia would, without necessity, be opposing the current top model with an in-house and presumably cheaper competitor.

At the same time, the RTX 5090 as a pure enthusiast graphics card should be enough to underline Nvidia’s supremacy in terms of performance

Which suggests that the RTX 5080 will also be released in 2024

On the other hand, the 90s and 80s models have always been launched at short intervals at the end of the same year:

  • The RTX 3080 was released on September 17, 2020, followed by the RTX 3090 on September 24, 2020.
  • The RTX 4090 was released on October 12, 2022, while the RTX 4080 was released about a month later, on November 16, 2022.

It is therefore quite conceivable that Nvidia will remain true to its line and still launch both top models in 2024

All in all, we think it is slightly more likely that only the new flagship will be released initially, followed by other models in 2025. But kopite7kimi could just as easily be right and the RTX 5080 could still be released in 2024.

The presumed specifications of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080

Chip Cores Memory configuration Power consumption
RTX 5090* GB202 24,576 512-bit GDDR7 450 Watt
RTX 5080* GB203 12.288 256-bit GDDR7 320 Watt
*Specifications not confirmed

How powerful will RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 be?

To classify the performance: In comparison, the RTX 4090 has 16,384 cores and uses GDDR6X graphics memory. This means that the RTX 5090 would have 50 percent more cores and faster graphics memory. At the same time, the clock rates are also likely to increase slightly (to over 3 GHz).

We therefore expect the RTX 5090 to deliver 50 to 60 percent more performance than the RTX 4090.

The RTX 5080, on the other hand, could come close to or even catch up with the RTX 4090 and at the same time noticeably outperform the RTX 4080 (9,728 cores). We expect 30 percent more performance here.

What do you think? Will we see the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 before the end of the year? Or do you think that only the RTX 5090 will be released for the time being, followed by the remaining models in 2025? Let us know in the comments!
