Against the Storm is considered one of the best building game surprises of 2022 and is currently available at a reduced price in the Steam Sale.

About half a year ago, Against the Storm launched in Early Access on Steam and immediately won the hearts of construction and city builder fans. Both in the GlobalESportNews test and in the Steam user reviews, the dark fantasy strategy game can convince, 95 percent of the over 9,000 user ratings are positive.

The title is now available for the first time at a great discount – we explain what it’s all about and whether the game might be something for you.

This is what the construction game surprise is all about

At first glance, Against the Storm (go here to play on Steam) looks like a classic Anno 1800-style building game, even though the graphics style is much more reminiscent of the real-time strategy classic Warcraft 3.

Better check it out right now in the gameplay trailer:

As a viceroy, you must build a thriving settlement in an apocalyptic world where acid never stops raining. As is typical for a construction game, you’ll first build industrial buildings such as farms, sawmills and brickyards to collect raw materials.

However, there is a nasty and extremely threatening twist: at regular intervals, the rain turns into a real storm and you have to fight for the survival of your villagers and the entire settlement. For example, huts protect your inhabitants, large stoves and enough fuel provide warmth and bulging pantries must not be missing when the storm washes the harvest from the fields.

This may sound a bit stressful for relaxed builders, but it’s always fair and an exciting challenge – and in return you don’t have to deal with real battles against attacking enemies.

If the storm should ever wipe out your settlement – no problem! Against the Storm is a roguelite strategy game, so failure is part of the game. You can start over in a new area, and after unlocking new advantages, the next run will be a little easier.

If you like building games, but you find fighting nature too stressful – this week also sees the release of some cool building games where you don’t have to fight for survival.

Against the Storm is currently reduced to 15 Euros, the offer is valid until April 27, 2023. If you still need a title to bridge the wait for potential city-building hits like Frostpunk 2 or Cities: Skylines 2, the game might be worth a look.
