Dan Houser left Rockstar Games and took a break. Now he returns with big ambitions and a small team

Dan Houser surprised everyone in early 2020 with the news that he would be leaving Rockstar Games . After 22 years as co-founder and vice-chairman with his brother Sam, the industry veteran was taking some time off.

Now Dan Houser is back on the scene with big plans for the future that start very small. Absurd Ventures is the name of his new media company that wants to tap into other spheres besides games.

What is already known

Absurd Ventures is still keeping quiet about future projects. The company consists so far of only a handful of employees, as reported by (Variety).

Houser and his team want to focus on storytelling. And that not only in gamesbut also in the form of films and comics. Houser paraphrases it as follows:

We’re building Absurd Ventures to create new universes and tell great stories wherever and however we can.

Dan Houser was instrumental as a writer in the stories of the worldwide success titles Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. There’s no question that the man knows his craft.

On the (official website) and the (Twitter account) you can then also find typically provocative sayings, for example And you thought culture was  before in crisisAt last, an American institution everyone can hate or the subtitle Storytelling, Philanthropy, Ultraviolence

The corporate trailer is also very … special:

It will be interesting to see what Houser has in mind for Absurd Ventures.

Another head of Rockstar Games, Leslie Benzies, had also left the company to do his own thing. It’s called Everywhere, and at best it reminds me of Grand Theft Auto at first glance:

What do you expect from Dan Houser’s new company? Are you looking forward to new projects? What direction would you like to see a first game from Absurd Ventures take? Would you have preferred the entire cast from previous GTAs to be on board for the sixth part? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
