GTA Online has been thrilling players worldwide for over eight years now and has been released on a correspondingly large number of platforms during that time: The PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, previously for PS3 and Xbox 360, and at the end of 2021 the NextGen versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will follow.
This raises the question for many fans whether and how crossplay is possible in GTA Online. In other words, cross-platform play in which, for example, PC players can play together with console players or owners of a PlayStation can play together with those of an Xbox. And then, of course, there would be the various PC platforms like Steam or Epic.
This is how crossplay works in GTA Online in 2021
Is there crossplay between PC and consoles?
No, currently there is no crossplay between PC and consoles. So currently, owners of a computer cannot make common cause in GTA Online with players on PlayStation or Xbox.
Will there be crossplay between PlayStation and Xbox?
No, also there is currently no crossplay between the different consoles. So if you own GTA Online on a PlayStation, you can’t play Grand Theft Auto 5 multiplayer with users of an Xbox.
However, at least PlayStation and Xbox players can currently play with each other across the different console generations. This means that PS5 and PS4 players and likewise Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One players can each play together.
Is there crossplay between Steam, Rockstar and Epic?
Yes, on the PC it doesn’t matter which platform you bought GTA 5 or GTA Online on – Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Because no matter where you play on the PC, all Rockstar games must now be started via the in-house Rockstar Social Club. Programmes like Steam & Co. therefore only act as a switching point and start the Rockstar client in the background.
Is crossplay coming with a new update?
There is currently no official information on whether GTA Online will be given more extensive cross-play options with a next update – as Fortnite, Destiny 2 or CoD Cold War, for example, are doing. However, there is hope.
Because NextGen versions of GTA 5 and a standalone version of GTA Online have been announced for 11 November 2021. According to Strauss Zelnick, head of Rockstar publisher Take-Two, the new version of GTA 5 will not be a “simple port”. Instead, the new technology of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will be optimally utilised.
There are no more concrete details at the moment, but many fans hope that GTA Online will get crossplay with the NextGen launch of GTA 5, which will finally connect PC and console players with each other.
