Gyro Control in Fornite – Why the mechanic is invigorating for shooters

Gyroscope control is available in an improved feature in Fortnite with the V.19.30 update. The motion sensors for controller users should be useful in more shooters.

The hand turns to the left, the crosshair pulls in the same direction at the same time. Precise aiming becomes much better in Fortnite thanks to the adapted motion control. The gyroscope technology (Gyro Control), which is particularly impressive in the Nintendo title Splatoon, is more than just an addition for shooters.

Precise and fast aiming using the wrists instead of the analogue stick: this is how the optional gyroscope control works in Fortnite, which was integrated into the Battle Royale this week. This can be adapted to your own playing style with the appropriate sensitivity. The developer “Jibb” Smart has shown in the explanatory video how the motion control and the flick stick work in practice.

To use gyroscope aiming in Fortnite, the aim button must be pressed. Then the controller reacts to the directional changes of the hands, which enables natural as well as accurate aiming. The same applies to building. Nevertheless, the control sticks can still be used, which means that both methods can be used individually or even simultaneously.

Unlike the Aim Assist, which has been criticised by the community for years, the gyroscope control allows for aiming without having to rely on artificial assistance. Thus, it is possible for controller users to make up for the actual disadvantage compared to PC users with a keyboard and mouse with natural movements.

Xbox still comes up empty

The gyro function is available for all controllers that have motion sensors. These include, above all, the Joy Cons of the Nintendo Switch as well as the Pro Controller. Since the update, special PC gamepads as well as the PS4 and PS5 controllers can access the new function in Fortnite.

However, Xbox does not currently offer motion control, which is why fans are already pushing for controllers of this type on social media. Because cross-play is still part of Fortnite, Xbox fans see themselves at a disadvantage, which is why action from Microsoft is hoped for soon.

Gyro Control and Aiming works in all shooters

More precision than with keyboard and mouse is hardly imaginable even in this day and age. Accordingly, this PC peripheral is untouchable, virtually without alternative, especially in first-person shooters like CS:GO and VALORANT. But the gyroscope control comes closest to the top dogs. Even flick shots with a sniper rifle are no problem with a little practice.

One Nintendo title in particular shows how well free aiming works in shooters. Since the release of Splatoon in 2015, millions of players have experienced how easy and natural aiming with gyro control can be – much better than with sticks. Until now, most people only knew motion control from the Wii controller for Wii Sports or as a realistic option for racing games.

The Splatoon series has proven that gyro control works perfectly in third-person shooters
