Half-Life breaks Steam record 24 years after release thanks to #RememberFreeman

Although Valve may never make Half-Life 3, the community surrounding the legendary shooter series is still going strong.

Half-Life has a new player record on Steam: on 14 August, Valve’s venerable first-person shooter reached a new high of 12,280 simultaneous users.

An extraordinary occurrence, considering that Half-Life was released on 19 November 1998 and will soon celebrate its 24th birthday!

Where did the record come from? On social media, thousands of players had mobilised in advance under the hashtag

What is RememberFreeman? With the event, the community around Half-Life wants to express its presence and passion for the series. Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 are considered seminal games for the entire industry and belong firmly in our list of the 250 best PC games of all time!
What’s the point of the whole thing
? Ultimately, the initiators only want to draw attention to the still very active fan base around Half-Life. The Half-Life mod community alone has produced groundbreaking projects such as Counter-Strike or the fantastic remake Black Mesa.

Since the first part from 1998, three addons (Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Decay), the sequel Half-Life 2 including the sequel offshoots Episode 1 and Episode 2 and the VR part Alyx have been released by the official side.

And what about Half-Life 3? So far we only know that Valve sees its priorities elsewhere and is pursuing other plans for the time being. There would have been several different new Half-Life projects, but they were all scrapped
