Hot tub and ASMR streams have been the talk of the town in recent months. Streamers like Amouranth and Indiefoxx made the Twitch categories big. But what is the state of the phenomenon today?
The so-called hot tub streams from streamers like Amouranth or Indiefoxx have been a controversial topic in the Twitch community since March. No other topic polarised as much as this one on the streaming platform. No wonder that the hot tub streams were given their own category – and were somewhat neglected.
This is one of the reasons why a different kind of stream has dominated the Twitch landscape since mid-June. With sexualised ASMR streams, the hot-tub meta pioneers caused the next controversial topic on Twitch.
Criticism and ban wave
There was sharp criticism from the community and other streamers like Imane “Pokimane” Anys. The majority feared that the entire platform, and thus also their own channels, would suffer from the lewd content. Major streamers like xQc or Asmongold even said it was unfair that streamers like Indiefoxx or Amouranth got off so lightly for repeated misconduct. The feeling that Twitch was applying double standards spread.
The streaming giant reacted and repeatedly banned the two streamers for short periods of time when they crossed the line. Indiefoxx even lost her Twitch partnership after her sixth ban and has not been allowed to stream on the platform since.
The topics have visibly faded into the background – but they haven’t gone away.
This is the state of the scandal trends
After the establishment of the hot tub meta and the sexualisation of the ASMR category, some time has now passed. So we took a look at how the scandal topics are doing on Twitch today.
When looking at the numbers, it becomes clear relatively quickly that the negative trend in hot tub streams has continued. After establishing the “Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches” category, it is briefly one of the most watched on Twitch. However, after it became clear that the visibility on the main page was no longer as good as it was in the beginning and the biggest streamers in the category switched to ASMR streams, the viewer numbers in the category collapsed.
Nevertheless, the category is able to maintain a decent level of average viewers. Not least because of somewhat curious hot-tub streams.
Looking again at the figures for the category “ASMR” in detail, one can see an opposite trend. The category was already very popular before Amouranth and Co. and had steadily increased in viewership. But with the start of “Ear Licking ASMR” and the entry of the big scandal streamers, the category received another huge boost. Viewership even tripled in the short term. The sixth and so far last ban for Indiefoxx seems to have done no harm.
Amouranth, the biggest streamer in both categories, cannot complain about bad numbers or a lack of interest in her streams. With almost 3.9 million followers on Twitch by now, she has doubled her userbase since the hot tub meta began. She continues to stream in both categories, increasing her fan base.
It remains to be seen how the scandal trends will continue and whether Twitch will perhaps take a tougher stance against streamers like Amouranth.
