Episodes: How many episodes are coming?

The prequel series House of the Dragon takes its format cues from Game of Thrones. Season 1 will therefore feature ten episodes. Nothing is known yet about possible further seasons.

Platform: Where can I watch the series?

In the US, House of the Dragon is released on HBO and HBO Max. The first episode will be released on the night of August 21-22.

Story: What is House of the Dragon about?

The plot revolves around the House of Targaryen, who 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones represent a powerful dynasty and rule dangerous dragons. As king, Viserys I Targaryen rules a peaceful Westeros. He is succeeded by his daughter from his first marriage, Rhaenyra Targaryen.
However, his second wife Alicent Hightower, the daughter of King Otto Hightower’s right-hand man, and her sons look enviously on the heir to the throne. The ensuing dramas eventually lead to open civil war in Westeros, which goes down in history as the “Dance of the Dragons “

The series House of the Dragon is based on the novel “Fire and Blood: The Rise and Fall of House Targaryen “ by George R.R. Martin, whose works also form the basis for the hit series Game of Thrones. Fire and Blood is a fictional historical work with many biographies and small stories.

Cast: Which cast is already known?

The key roles of House of the Dragon have already been cast. The cast of the series sends some well-known and many rather unknown actors into the race:

  • Viserys I. Targaryen: Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, Peaky Blinders)
  • Rhaenyra Targaryen: Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers)
  • Rhaenys Targaryen: Eve Best (Nurse Jackie, The King’s Speech)
  • Daemon Targaryen: Matt Smith (Doctor Who, His House)
  • Alicent Hightower: Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Bates Motel)
  • Otto Hightower: Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider Man)
  • Criston Cole: Fabien Frankel (NYPD Blue)
  • Corlys Velaryon: Steve Toussaint (Prince of Persia, Doctor Who)
  • Mysaria: Sonoya Mizuno (La La Land)

And of course animated dragons also play an important role in the prequel series:

The brains behind House of the Dragon are also already known: For instance, author George R.R. Martin is involved in the production and the composer of Game of Thrones is also on board:

Producers: Ryan J. Condal, George R.R. Martin, Miguel Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis, Sara Hess

Music: Ramin Djawadi

Trailers and pictures: What’s to see already

The first official images of the characters in House of the Dragon have been revealed. A short teaser trailer reveals many characters (though none of the scaled ones yet) and also already shows some of the new locations:

What can be deduced from the trailer? The story (at least of season 1) takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, long before the death of King Aerys Targaryen by Jamie Lannister. At that time, the Targaryens’ dragons had not yet withered away, so we expect similar calibre to Drogon from GoT.

A small, easily overlooked detail: For a brief moment, the coat of arms of the Starks can be seen at the jousting tournament. However, this family is not likely to play an important role in House of the Dragon. And of course, a shot of the iron throne, which apparently contains several hundred more swords at this point, cannot be missing from the video.

In May, HBO then released a more extensive trailer. Here we could directly see the impressive dragons that carry their lords through the air. At the same time, the trailer gives a foretaste of the political skirmishes known from GoT. Some well-known noble houses swear their allegiance here, for example the Starks and the Baratheons.

You can marvel at some Targaryens, Hightowers and Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Serpent, in full costume in the following photos from the set:
