Since February 13, Avowed has been playable for pre-orders. We’ve already completed the role-playing game and can tell you how much gameplay you can plan for the main quest and side activities.
Avowed is here – or almost. While normal players will have to wait until February 18, pre-orders of the 100-euro premium edition can get started as early as the test embargo on February 13.
We’ve already played through the new role-playing game from the Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds creators and can tell you in good conscience that you’re in for something big. Although Avowed has been somewhat neglected by Microsoft’s marketing so far, the inconspicuous title hides a really good and big role-playing game.
What is it about?
Avowed is set in the fantasy world of Eora, the same world as the two Pillars of Eternity titles. Previous knowledge of these two iso role-playing games is helpful, but not absolutely necessary to understand Avowed. The storyline is completely self-contained.
In Avowed, you take on the role of a special envoy of the Aedyranian Empire. The emperor has sent you to the northern continent, the so-called Living Lands, because a mysterious plague is spreading there. The Dream Scourge clouds the minds of those infected, causing mushrooms and other greenery to sprout all over their bodies.
You have been tasked by the emperor to find the source of the Dream Scourge and put an end to the plague. On your way to the Living Lands, however, you are shipwrecked off the coast of the Living Lands, which is why you start the game with nothing but the clothes on your back.
How much gameplay can you expect?
Official information about the playing time of Avowed was scarce in the run-up to the release. Obsidian only hinted that the playing time should be similar to that of its role-playing game predecessor The Outer Worlds. The following information is therefore based on our experiences in the test:
- Only the main story:approx. 20 hours
- Quick playthroughapprox. 30 hours (main story and a few side quests):
- Normal play:; approx. 40–50 hours
- All quests and side activities: ca. 60–70 hours
Please note that your play time may vary depending on your own demands and the chosen difficulty level. Since Avowed does not use level scaling, you will face deadly opponents on normal difficulty if you advance too quickly into acts 2 and 3. The only way to avoid this is to go leveling or to lower the difficulty level.
However, if you play at a normal pace and diligently take on side quests, you shouldn’t have these problems. Collecting items such as fragments or trying out multiple dialog choices can also increase your playing time.
