A new Star Wars Battlefront? Not quite – but this mod for the multiplayer shooter Squad is very reminiscent of Rogue One in terms of gritty atmosphere.
The military shooter Squad is known for its grounded, realistically staged multiplayer battles. This penchant for realism is now benefiting Star Wars, of all things, as a huge mod for Squad almost rebuilds the game into a new Battlefront spin-off.
Gloomy atmosphere like in Rogue One
The comparison with Rogue One, one of the most popular films of the star saga among fans, is no coincidence. The film is best known for its impressive battle scenes in the third act on the planet Scarif, which showed an unusually dark side of the otherwise rather family-friendly franchise.
The Galactic Contention mod for the shooter Squad is now heading in exactly the same direction. Actually, you could already call it a total conversion, because nothing remains of the scenario anchored in the present. Instead, you can expect pure Star Wars flair combined with the hardcore shooter gameplay of Squad.
You can’t take many hits, nor can you resort to unrealistic gadgets or other gimmicks that are the order of the day in many other multiplayer shooters. This makes the battles particularly intense, even if you are just a droid.
This is all in Galactic Contention
- More than 15 maps: You’ll visit many familiar locations, such as the cloud city of Bespin, Coruscant, Cato Neimodia, Kashyyk and Geonosis
- 15 playable factions broken down into battalions, sub-factions, races and more.
- Over 25 vehicles you’ll recognise from the movies, of course.
- 150 unit types to provide long-lasting variety.
And what does this scope finally degenerate into? In large-scale 50 vs. 50 battles, which are much tougher than in Star Wars: Battlefront 2, for example. But best make your own picture:
Do you already own Squad and want to try out the huge mod for yourself right now? No problem, a single click will take you directly to the (Steam Workshop). Keep in mind, however, that the installation of the huge project requires an impressive 30 GB of storage space.
