The popular video player is getting a new AI feature. It works in real time and locally.

At CES 2025, VideoLAN presented a new AI function for the popular open-source video player: real-time subtitle creation and translation. More than 100 languages are planned.

How does the new tool work?

The texts are created locally and in real time using a plugin. It uses the speech recognition system Whisper from OpenAI. In a short video on X, VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf explains how the tool works.

It runs on the device, locally, offline and without cloud services.

It has not yet been announced when the feature will be available. We will keep you updated and let you know as soon as the date is set.

Why is the VLC player so popular?

A few days ago, Jean-Baptiste Kempf celebrated 6 billion downloads of the video player and was pleased with the large number of users in times of streaming services.

The new feature has been very well received in the community. On the r/technology sub-reddit, fans are expressing their anticipation. Reddit user Ok-Peak_460 even calls the new function a game changer and it would be great if this could be implemented in other video players as well.

The fact that the plug-in works offline is also met with enthusiasm. This is what user baylonedward writes

You had me at offline. Finally, someone is using the AI functions without the internet.
