They’ve shown what they can do in the Warhammer universe. Their cyberpunk alternative to the legendary Civilization series, Zephon, is set to be released in 2024 and you can try it out now
On Steam, you have the chance to try out a new Civilization competitor until 22 November (Zephon). The title comes from the makers of the 4X title (Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War) and lets you take control of one of three factions fighting for supremacy on a post-apocalyptic Earth
So quasi (Nuclear Gandhis) dream planet, if you know what we mean.
What is Zephon?
As extensive as it is simple: As our colleague explains in his extensive preview, despite the complexity of the title, it is quite simple to describe it for connoisseurs of the genre: Civilization light with better battles
And, as with its quasi-predecessor in the Warhammer SciFi universe, the focus is on these
All the pillars of the genre are there, but…: Of course you also construct buildings, expand, research and make decisions in story sequences accompanied by drawings, but the battles between armies are central. These are staged directly on the strategy map and are based on the specially developed combat system from the developers at Proxy Studios.
Zephon, meanwhile, is stripping back some of the other pillars of the genre, such as diplomacy or the expansion of cities, in order to focus entirely on war, research and unit construction.
What is included in the demo?
You only play the single-player mode on a small map with two enemy factions. There are three leaders to choose from and two NPC groups, including the eponymous Zephon. Research is capped above the third tier
The complete version will include the following:
- Aside from the single player mode, there will also be a co-op and PvP multiplayer.
- Larger and more varied maps
- Eight leaders
- Three NPC factions
- More than 50 units spread across 10 tech levels
- More quests, including a big endgame finale.
- Steam Workshop Support
When will Zephon be released? Sometime in 2024, what could be the final war on a devastated Earth will break out in Zephon.
The video above gives you an impression of Zephon’s atmosphere and visuals. And immediately afterwards you will find plenty of content on various other alternatives to Civilization, where we are still waiting for the announcement of a seventh part. Even Microsoft wants to throw its civilization into the ring in the future with Ara: History Untold. So, have you tried Zephon yet? If so, what do you think of the quasi-sequel to the niche title from the Warhammer 40K universe? Do you think they will appeal to many with this new creation? Based on your first impressions, what is still missing to make it a true Civ competitor? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments!
