TearUp wants to make the destruction of the Matrix city, with which the Unreal Engine 5 was advertised, possible. First results even the Epic boss finds remarkable
Since Teardown at the latest, we know how far destruction in games can go when a passionate developer is behind it. A new project now wants to test the limits of the Unreal Engine 5 and is called … TearUp.
This is not about burglaries, however, but about heroic fantasies: The Matrix city, with which Epic advertises the new technology of the Unreal Engine 5, is to serve as a playground here. And we slip into the onesie of a flying superhero.
The project is apparently still in its infancy. But if solo developer Micah Berninghausen has his way, the tech demo is set to become a real game.
Breaking an entire city
On Twitter, Berninghausen shows off his successes so far. A hero reminiscent of Superman flies fist-first through skyscrapers, which then collapse to great effect, at least partially:
Solodev @GamedevMicah is developing a superhero destruction game in UnrealEngine5! 🦸

The city caused quite a stir in 2021 after the announcement of Unreal Engine 5. Among other things, it shows the new Nanite technology. The fact that buildings and their interiors can be displayed in real time thanks to Nanite is one of the great strengths of UE5.
Here you can see the video in question:
Tearup now combines that with physical destruction. While the images clearly show that the game is still in an early stage of development. However, the developer displays a lot of enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Tim Sweeney, the head of UE5 developer Epic Games, is also found to be a prominent supporter of his work. In a tweet, Sweeney expressed his enthusiasm for the physical destruction of the city.
What do you think of the superhero game? Would you like to live out a destructive Superman fantasy? Or is it enough for you to shimmy through skyscraper canyons as Spidey? Feel free to post your opinion in the comments!
