We tried out the Early Access version of the excavator construction kit with the bombastic destruction physics for you.
Construction machines are one of those things that can trigger great enthusiasm, especially in males, whether young or old. Excavators, steam rollers and dump trucks often cause jaws to drop.
But it can be even more exciting, as the recently released Instruments of Destruction on Steam shows. In the demolition simulation, you can also drive wheel loaders and shovel excavators and use them to flatten old industrial plants – but have you ever done that with a ten-metre flame roller on wheels?
What’s Instruments of Destruction about?
If the name of a game says it all, then it’s Instruments of Destruction. There is no story, but there is a campaign: you travel across ten different islands and have to complete various missions. These are not particularly creative, because basically it’s almost always about breaking something.
But before you can get down to work, you first have to build your first excavator. The game provides you with numerous options for doing this. You can directly build a huge shovel excavator out of the ground or, like us, start off a little smaller.
You can see one of our first creations – a kind of sound-proof mini wheel loader – in the following pictures:
With every successfully completed challenge, you will receive additional money and experience points credited to your accounts, which you can use again and again to unlock new components for your destruction machines.
This is not only motivating, but also bitterly necessary: each of the ten islands has three difficulty levels, in each of which you have to complete more demanding tasks – for example, destroy 90 percent of all buildings in 90 seconds. Of course, that won’t work with the little excavator, so you’ll have to use heavier equipment.
For whom is Instruments of Destruction worthwhile?
The idea for Instruments of Destruction is of course not completely new, with Besiege a very similar title already appeared on Steam in 2020. However, Instruments of Destruction has one big advantage: the absolutely phenomenal physics of destruction.
So if you enjoy simply destroying a lot in a very effective way, you should give the title a chance. The game suits you even better if you not only want to use the given vehicles, but also enjoy tinkering. Dozens of weapons, from shovels to circular saws to flamethrowers and rocket launchers, definitely invite you to experiment.
What do we like so far? What not?
Strengths of Instruments of Destruction
- Fantastic destruction physics make for impressive moments
- Large selection of components invites tinkering
- In addition to the campaign, there’s a sandbox modeUnexpectedly cool soundtrack
Weaknesses of Instruments of Destructions
- So far only ten worlds, all of which have been quickly seen
- Building could be more comfortable
- No mod support yet (but according to the developer this will be added)
- Instruments of Destruction entered Early Access on Steam on 2 March 2022. You can still get the game at the reduced price of 15 euros until 9 March, after which you will be asked to pay 17 euros.
