The news sci-fi fans have been waiting for about Dune 3 is finally here: Work is now officially underway on the finale of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy

Finally there is certainty: Dune 3 is really coming. Legendary Pictures has confirmed this to Deadline and Variety officially. Denis Villeneuve will return as director to finish his cinematic adaptation of the sci-fi novels with Messiah

Dune 3 now officially in the works

So far, Villeneuve has made no secret ofhis intention to make a total of three Dune films based on the first two books by Frank Herbert. However, official confirmation has been a long time coming.

However, the news comes as no real surprise The first Dune not only impressed critics and sci-fi fans, but also did well at the box office. Dune 1 grossed more than 400 million US dollars worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) – an impressive result for a cinema release in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The critical and commercial success of Dune: Part Two has now secured the future of the sci-fi series: With a budget of 190 million US dollars, the second part currently has box office takings of 630 million (via Box Office Mojo), while the film is even still in theaters.

When will Dune: Part Three be released in theaters?

One burning question about Dune 3 remains unanswered: It is not known when the film adaptation of Messiah will be released. There is no new information on this and it is very possible that Part Three will be quite a while yet.

Villeneuve himself revealed that he is anything but in a hurry with Dune 3. This definitely fits in with the plot of the direct book: Messiah takes place 12 years after the events of the first novel in the context of the sci-fi universe.

But hopefully we won’t have to wait quite that long: According to an established industry insider Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are still aiming for a cinema release in 2027 at least by the end of 2023.

By then, Villeneuve should have his hands full anyway: According to his own statement, the director has at least four projects on the table right now – such as a planned Cleopatra epic, the HBO series The Son and the film adaptation of Rendezvous with 31/439.

The fourth would be the film adaptation of the novel Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobsen. The book is dedicated to a realistic scenario that would take place in the event of a nuclear conflict. However, Villeneuve and Legendary Pictures will only tackle this project after Dune: Messiah.
