Director Gareth Edwards wants to pay tribute to one of Steven Spielberg’s best films with Jurassic World Rebirth: Jaws.
FromJuly 2, 2025the dinosaurs will once again stalk across the big screen when Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters. Gareth Edwards, who was previously responsible for films such as Star Wars: Rogue One, Godzilla and The Creature, is at the helm.
Jurassic World Rebirth is supposed to be reminiscent of Jaws.
So the director is no stranger to sci-fi creatures. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Edwards now hints at which legendary screen classic he wants to pay tribute to with Jurassic World: Rebirth:
Personally, [Jurassic World: Rebirth] is a love letter to Steven Spielberg and his early films. There are moments in this movie that remind me a lot of Jaws. For me, it’s a collection of the best moments from the films I grew up with as a kid. [Rebirth] ultimately boils down to the fact that it is an adventurous odyssey across this island, which is also about survival.
Jaws started in theaters in 1975 and is still considered one of the best films of all time, almost 50 years later. At the latest with this film, Steven Spielberg made his big breakthrough, which led to him directing further excellent films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. and finally the first Jurassic Park.
By the way: While a first trailer is still a long time coming, at least there are already a few new images of Jurassic World: Rebirth.

Is Rebirth starting a new Jurassic World trilogy?
Like the first part of the dinosaur series, Rebirth could now kick off a new trilogy, as Gareth Edwards also suggests in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
I can’t speak for Universal, but for me it felt like a new trilogy in some ways. I’m not sure what their plans are. But I feel like this is going to be the start of a brand new chapter for this franchise.
It should come as no surprise if Rebirth actually establishes a new Jurassic trilogy. After all, the previous series was able to generate over $1.6 billion worldwide (via Box Office Mojo ), even though the reviews and the audience response left more and more to be desired. Jurassic World: Rebirth opens in theaters on July 2, 2025. The new film by director Gareth Edwards stars actors such as Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Ed Skrein (Deadpool) and Rupert Friend (Hitman: Agent 47).
