Microsoft has accidentally leaked the first real screenshots from the construction game and we analyse what they reveal new about the game.

I guess someone was a bit hasty again! For a short time there were screenshots from Cities: Skylines 2 which should not have been online yet. The exciting thing about it: The screenshots showed the new graphics of the building game for the first time and also included a preview of some new features that were not yet known.

In the meantime, the pictures on the official site have been removed again. However, not fast enough. Eager fans didn’t take long and were able to retrieve and save the images using the web archive.

We cannot upload the leaked pictures in this news, (but they can be seen on other pages).

This is what the screenshots reveal about the build-up game

(On Reddit) Fans of the predecessor are already happily sharing what the screenshots show. We also took a close look at them and asked Cities: Skylines long-time player Michael Graf for his opinion. The result was a whole list of exciting details.

  • More realistic graphics: Even though Cities: Skylines didn’t have a pure comic look, the colour scheme was mostly rather bright and contrasty. The screenshots now show, however, that the cities look somewhat desaturated and thus also quite a bit more natural.
  • Less advertising: The sometimes very silly advertising banners that covered the buildings in commercial districts also contributed to the comic-like look of Cities: Skylines. Judging by the screenshots, the sequel seems to scale this back and relies on rather discreet advertising.
  • The Tram: The screenshots show the cables and tracks of a tram. This means that this means of transport will be there from the beginning this time. In the predecessor, the tram was only added later via Snowfall DLC.
  • New street markings: On a picture from above you can clearly see that the street markings now have more details. For example, intersections are no longer just blank spots, there are also speed markers on the motorway.
  • New pedestrian bridge: A new pedestrian bridge can also be seen in one picture, which crosses several motorway lanes and is held in place by a cable construction.

With more time, I’m sure you can get some more details from the screenshots. Have you perhaps been able to make a few discoveries that we missed? By all means write them down in the comments

Cities: Skylines 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. But the fact that the images have now been leaked could indicate that the developers will be sharing new information soon. Most likely, the game will play a role in the big Summer Game Festival weekend. Perhaps we will then also learn a rough timeframe in which the new city builder will see the light of day in the gaming world.
