No, this is not a new Star Wars movie. There is finally a trailer and final release date for both parts of director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon.

Originally planned by Zack Snyder as a Star Wars film, Rebel Moon is now becoming his very own thing. The big sci-fi two-parter with a budget of 166 million US dollars finally has a first trailer and a concrete release date from Netflix.

This is what the first trailer for Rebel Moon shows

So far there have only been a few images and behind-the-scenes videos for Rebel Moon, but now a first trailer for the sci-fi two-parter has been released at the Opening Night Live of gamescom 2023. It’s almost four minutes long and picks us up on what Rebel Moon is all about.

What is Rebel Moon about? Since it is easy to lose track of everything with all the explosions, huge guns and spaceships or spider-people with burning swords, we have the official story summary for you here:

When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruler, the mysterious stranger named Kora (Sofia Boutella) becomes their last hope to survive. Entrusted with the task of finding skilled warriors to unite in a hopeless resistance against the mother world, Kora gathers a small group of warriors – misfits, resisters, peasants and orphans of wars on alien worlds united by a common need for redemption and vengeance. As a shadow of entire empires looms over the most unlikely of moons, a battle for the fate of the galaxy is fought, from which an army of new heroes emerges.

That’s quite an announcement. But it’s best to take a look for yourself at the official trailer for Rebel Moon:

When does Rebel Moon start on Netflix?

This is the release date of both parts: The original version of Rebel Moon was once longer than three hours. Because of this, Zack Snyder has decided to split his sci-fi two-parter into two parts. While the release date of the first part was already known, we now also know that of the sequel. Rebel Moon will thus start on the following dates:

  • Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire starts on 22 December 2023 at Netflix.
  • Rebel Moon: The Scargiver follows on 19 April 2024 at Netflix

What else sci-fi fans should know about Rebel Moon

Rebel Moon almost became a Star Wars movie: If Rebel Moon now brings back memories of a sci-fi tale from a galaxy far, far away, you’re not wrong. Originally, director Zack Snyder’s Netflix two-parter was actually planned as a Star Wars film.

But since Synder wanted to tell his own story with his own characters from the beginning and take a hard R-rating with him, the enthusiasm at Lucasfilm was limited. By his own admission, Zack Snyder’s pitch to the mouse company was a washout from the start.

There’s even a video game coming: Netflix now has big plans for Rebel Moon. Not only are the two films to be released on the streaming service, Netflix is also planning to develop a video game for the new sci-fi brand.

You shouldn’t expect too much from it, though: The mobile studio Super Evil Megacorp (TMNT: Splintered Fate, Vainglory, Catalyst Black), which previously didn’t develop big AAA productions but rather manageable mobile games, is responsible for the development. Rebel Moon is to be a co-op action title for up to four players, exclusively for Netflix subscribers.

What do you think of the first trailer for Rebel Moon? What are your hopes and expectations for Netflix’s $166 million sci-fi two-parter?
