Mario gets a new voice after 32 years, legendary speaker says goodbye

An era is coming to an end. Charles Martinet has lent his voice to Mario for over 32 years, the legendary voice actor now takes on a new role at Nintendo.

If you’ve ever played a Mario game, you almost certainly know Charles Martinet The voice actor has been lending his voice to the plumber in blue overalls (and other Nintendo characters) since 1991, but is now hanging up his moustache.

No more Mario for Charles Martinet

As Nintendo has already officially confirmed, Charles Martinet will no longer be heard in upcoming games – already in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which will be released on 20 October 2023. Who will be heard as Mario, Luigi and Co. instead, however, is not known at the moment. (Maybe it will be Chris Pratt?)

Charles Martinet isn’t retiring completely yet though, he’s taking on a new role at Nintendo to do so. Martinet will remain with fans as a Mario ambassador and is likely to continue showing up at major Nintendo events

It is not known what exactly is behind the fact that Charles Martinet will no longer be voicing Mario and Co. from now on. you can read the official statement from Nintendo as follows: 

Charles Martinet has been the voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time – ever since the release of Super Mario 64. Now Charles will take on a new task as Mario Ambassador. While he will be retiring as a voice actor for characters in our games, he will continue to travel the world to share the joy of Mario encounters with all of you!

It’s been an honour to bring Mario to life with Charles for so many years, and we want to thank him and honour that achievement. Look forward to a special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles himself, which we will post at a later date.
