Yesterday saw the release of Metro Awakening, the latest adventure in the dark Metro universe, and for the first time, the community is being transported into an immersive VR experience. Developed by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Deep Silver and Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, the VR game is available on PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest, SteamVR and Viveport.

Metro Awakening serves as a prequel to the acclaimed title Metro 2033 The title tells the origin story of Khan, one of the most mysterious characters in the series. At the beginning of his story, however, Khan still goes by the name Serdar and is a doctor. He goes on a search through the dangerous tunnels of the Moscow metro for his missing wife. This desperate mission forces Serdar to confront his deepest fears and the sinister threats of the underworld. This ultimately makes him the spiritual leader of the survivors and a legend in the metro universe.

Intensive VR experience

The VR technology takes the apocalyptic world of Metro Awakening to a new level. Players experience the claustrophobic tunnels and the constant threat of mutants up close. The flickering of the head torch in dark corridors, the frantic search for gas mask filters and the oppressive panic that accompanies every step are even more intense. Survival and stealth mechanics flow seamlessly into one another and offer total immersion in the unforgiving world of the Metro.

For those with arachnophobia, an Arachnophobia mode will be released afterwards, which allows players to explore the metro without the menacing eight-legged creatures.

Editions of Metro Awakening

Metro Awakening is available in two editions. The Standard Edition Deluxe Edition

The story of Metro Awakening was written by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original Metro novels. Glukhovsky, who also served as a consultant on the story and lore, explained how important this origin story is to him, as it revisits the roots of the Metro series – now in a form that fully exploits the possibilities of modern VR technology.
