AMD is bringing its FSR 3.0 upscaling technology to the current generation of consoles and with it a few more frames

AMD has brought its FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) upscaling technology to Microsoft and Sony’s current consoles. In addition, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is to be activated for FSR on all platforms

The third iteration of FSR 3.0 and the frame generation function should enable significantly smoother images.

For the time being, only the fantasy shooterImmortals of Aveumfrom last year is making a start.

Why is this important? The example of Immortals of Aveum shows that FSR can provide significantly more frames on both the Xbox consoles and the PS5, which can have a significant impact on gaming enjoyment. In the future, even more games will be upgraded with AMD’s upscaling process

What is upscaling? This is a technology designed to improve image quality in games without compromising performance too much.

This involves rendering the individual frames in a lower resolution and then upscaling them using AI or certain algorithms.

In plain language: With upscaling methods such as AMD’s FSR 3.0 or Nvidia’sDLSS 3you get significantly more FPS out of your hardware without having to buy new hardware or even a new console.

Almost double FPS with FSR 3.0

In detail: The colleagues from Digital Foundry took a closer look at the result on Xbox and PlayStation 5 and came to a clear conclusion:

With FSR 3.0 and Frame Generation enabled, up to 78 percent more FPS is possible. This is a huge difference and will be clearly noticeable for most players. Especially if you are using a screen with 120 Hertz or more

  • PlayStation 5: 67 percent more FPS on average
  • Xbox Series X: 72.3 percent more FPS on average
  • Xbox Series S: 78.5 percent more FPS on average

An example: The Xbox Series X brings Immortals of Aveum without FSR and without Frame Generation to 40 to 60 FPS, depending on the game scene. With FSR and frame generation, the value is between 70 and 90 FPS, according to Digital Foundry.

Good to know: The Xbox Series S actually experiences the highest performance increase, achieving the highest FPS despite its lower performance.

This is due to the low resolution with which the Series S works. With active FSR, it only renders at 432p and scales this resolution up to 1080p. This allows it to generate even more FPS, although it is actually the weakest console.

However, this is also noticeable in the picture quality, which is clearly not as good as that of the PS5 or the Xbox Series X.

When is FSR 3.0 coming for my favorite game? There are no announcements about other titles at the moment, but we fully expect other developers to join in soon.
