Myriads: Renaissance moves city building to extreme heights and adds tower defense

Two people are currently working on an exciting mix of city builder, Civilization and tower defense game. A demo is already available, soon the full version will follow

Looking into the distance to find them, to drive them across the sky and bind them forever – that could be your stately recited oath at the beginning of a game of (Myriads: Renaissance) which you take at the top of your island cloud fortress.

The mix of city builder lite, Civilization and tower defense game, releasing on June 1, 2023, aims to crown you ruler of a kingdom in lofty heights 

Down-to-earth, on the other hand, are the goals that Sleeping Eight Studio, consisting of just two people, has set for their debut work. The creators don”t expect to introduce the next big evolution of the genre, but want to deliver a small title with nice ideas where one game lasts three to four hours

The basic idea: With massive iron chains you connect initially loose drifting islands, construct buildings on them, accumulate resources, send out airships, found new island cities, erect defense towers, and engage with other noble families. Eventually, you”ll gain supremacy – or your empire will literally fall to pieces again.

 

Story: Historically, the – attention pun – chain of events, which you can play over and over again, is set in motion by the so-called great rupture. This literally shatters the world into thousands and thousands of floating islands, on which you and your opponents can form new empires from then on.

If you don”t feel like downloading the demo offered on Steam, but still want to see some gameplay footage, just take a look at this older, but in many parts still representative playthrough of the demo.

Mouse and keyboard are operated by the developers themselves. Nothing is told, but you can see how the game plays round by round:

Gameplay of Myriads: Renaissance

As mentioned at the beginning, you throw turn-based chains from island to island, bringing them up to your cities. You puzzle the different biomes together piece by piece. Over time, you”ll create your own landscape, from which you”ll set off into the distance with airships to found new outposts.

On the fields you”ll get, you”ll construct buildings that will bring you various resources or bonuses. With these you will lay new ships on keel and build defense towers, which offer rudimentary protection against the approaching waves of corsairs  For periodically the buccaneers set out to pilfer your possessions.

In the course of the rounds, you will also have to establish trade routes to transport raw materials from afar back to your seat of power, just like a colonial lord. Sufficient variety is also provided: The island world is procedurally generated anew for every match

At first glance,

Myriads: Renaissance is an interestingly implemented idea, which, especially in terms of graphics, design and sound, shows that only two people are working on it. But if the premise is implemented well in the finished game, lovers of 4X turn-based strategy might have fun with the title.
