The multiplayer sandbox is already attracting numerous players in Early Access. We have information on gameplay, open world and the final release.

There is a new star in the survival sky: Myth of Empires is already celebrating impressive player numbers in Early Access. But what is actually the great attraction of the new medieval sandbox? And when is the final release planned?

Before you read on, take a look at the trailer. The video shows the fascinating mix of Mount & Blade and tough survival:

What kind of game is Myth of Empires?

Medieval, multiplayer, sandbox, survival: these terms describe Myth of Empires quite well. Unlike most survival games, however, it’s not just about building a safe place for yourself. No, here things are a few dimensions bigger: you rise to the level of commander of huge armies, which you then send into battle against your fellow players. At least that’s the goal of the developers. For the time being, there is only a basic game in Early Access.

Your career starts at the very bottom of the feudal pecking order, and in 16 levels you can make it to nobleman. Whether you prefer to be a sword-wielding warrior in the front line or a cunning strategist in the background, Myth of Empires leaves it up to you.

The gameplay: what are you doing here?

You can play PvE or PvP on different servers, and it should also be possible to easily switch from one to the other. The game focuses on a close combat system with swords and shields. If you are in the mood for ranged combat, you can also use archery.

As far as the survival elements are concerned, Myth of Empires is compared in many comments with Ark, Valheim and Conan Exiles. For example, you can tame horses and ride them or recruit NPCs, collect and build resources, and so on. Even in Early Access you can hammer together a pretty thick fortress.

The open world is based on medieval Asia, and the landscapes and architecture look accordingly. According to the developers, the map is 64 square kilometres in total and offers a lot of variety, from snowy mountain ridges to dense forests.

You are either on foot or on horseback. While exploring, you will often encounter wild animals or human NPCs, who can be hostile or friendly to you. A lot more content will be added until the final release. Will Myth of Empires eventually earn a place among our favourite open worlds? The competition is damn strong:

Release: When and where will Myth of Empires be released?

Early Access has been running on Steam since 18 November 2021. The final release date has not yet been set, but should be in 12 months at the earliest – i.e. not before the end of 2022. According to the developers, this may well be delayed.

The full version will contain more content, for example a tutorial for new players, more game modes and better animations. The suggestions of the community will be included.

Myth of Empires currently costs 25 euros. The price is to be raised slightly for the full version. Are you up for even more medieval games?

Why is Myth of Empires so successful on Steam?

Myth of Empires is currently the 25th most played game on Steam. Around 35,000 users are logged in at the same time and the trend is pointing upwards. There are several reasons for this.

For one, Myth of Empires benefits from its broad audience. The game comes from the Chinese indie developer Angela Games and therefore offers full Chinese language support, which opens the game directly to the huge East Asian games market.

In addition, the developers are working together with Twitch streamers to make their game better known, and Twitch Drops with in-game rewards are available for viewers. At the start of Early Access, there was also a discount promotion that was guaranteed to convince one or two people to take a look.

However, not all players are enthusiastic. The user reviews are 74 percent positive – or “mostly positive”, as Steam puts it. Criticism is mainly for technical problems such as FPS drops and translation errors. The graphics, on the other hand, are already receiving a lot of praise; Myth of Empires is based on the Unreal Engine 4. And opinions differ about crafting – some think it’s great, others think it’s too much of a grind.
