The rumours have come true: Dead Space really is returning. The Reveal raises many questions. We answer as many as we can.
We write this about every other announcement it feels like, but: the leaks were correct. Dead Space is indeed returning – and as a remake. During the EA Play Livestream 2021, the remake of the 2008 classic was officially announced. There was only a tiny teaser to be seen, but of course we got more info from EA.
Everything you should know about the Dead Space remake
What kind of game will Dead Space be?
You’d hardly guess it: Dead Space will be a remake of Dead Space, which was released in 2008. The remake is said to “inherit the strengths of the original” and “take it into a new era”. Unlike a remaster, the new Dead Space has been developed completely from scratch, rather than just cranking up the texture resolution and adding fancy lighting. In terms of content, however, the remake follows its roots:
– As engineer Isaac Clarke, you land on the supposedly abandoned spaceship USG Ishimura.
– Murderous necromorphs lurk in the corridors.
– Isaac uses every tool alternatively as a weapon – the plasma cutter returns.
– If you want to play smart, shoot Necromorphs primarily on the limbs, never on the head first.
– Isaac is looking for his girlfriend Nicole, who is supposedly hidden somewhere on the ship.
So the initial situation sounds identical to the original. To what extent the plot follows different paths here and possibly also leads to different endings, we cannot yet assess.
In terms of gameplay, however, everything seems to remain the same: Dead Space will be survival horror, in which you have to be clever with ammunition and survive in an absolutely deadly environment. The remake will also do without microtransactions and even loading times. To what extent the remake of Dead Space is supposed to “honour and improve” the original, you can read in the separate article.
Release: When will the remake be released?
EA has not yet communicated a final release date. Since there is only a tiny teaser so far and the marketing phases for EA’s big triple-A productions are usually quite long, we expect a release at the very earliest at the end of 2022 – possibly only in 2023 or 2024.
Platforms: What will the remake be released on?
Dead Space will be a pure next or current-gen game. It will therefore no longer be released for PS4 and Xbox One, but exclusively for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X
