Metro Awakening was unveiled at the State of Play with a gameplay trailer

A new installment in the popular Metro series is coming – for VR: Metro Awakening was announced at the Sony State of Play. The shooter acts as a prequel to Metro 2033, telling the story of the first part of the post-apocalyptic series.

Metro Awakening comes with the typical elements that fans would expect: Claustrophobic underground tunnels, stealth sections, creepy mutants and, of course, the gas mask for the perfect survival feel.

But just take a look for yourself:

Unlike in the previous Metro titles, we don’t play Artyom in Metro Awakening, but a doctor named Serdar.

He wants to save his wife and has to fight his way through the dangerous and contaminated tunnels of the eponymous Moscow metro in the year 2028.

Dmitry Gluchowski, author of the novel for the Metro games, is once again on board as a consultant for the story of the prequel.

Is this Metro 4 now?

Metro Awakening is being developed by Vertigo Games, who already have experience with VR shooters. For example, the Dutch studio developed the zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine and the VR hack&slay Hellsweeper.

What does this mean for the successor to Metro Exodus? Probably nothing. Because 4A Games, the studio behind the main parts of the Metro series, is almost certainly still working on Metro 4, which was already confirmed a few years ago (and is not a VR game).

“Return to the Metro roots “

Metro Awakening will be released exclusively for VR systems – also on PC. PlayStation VR2, Steam VR (i.e. HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, etc.) and Meta Quest 2 and 3 have been confirmed so far. If you want, you can already add the game to your wishlist on Steam. The release date is only stated as 2024, a more precise date has not yet been set.

Metro creator Gluchowski is euphoric about the release and says: “This original story is very close to my heart. For me, it’s a return to the roots and foundation of the series – now on the technical level of VR. “
