Everyone is afraid of Starfield – but on Steam some new games dare to take on the giant space role-playing game.

At the moment, the whole gaming world is talking about nothing but Starfield: While some are sure that they can easily put 100 hours or more into Bethesda’s latest game, others think that Todd Howard and Co. might have promised a bit too much in advance.

But regardless of that, it is already clear that the role-playing game is selling like hot cakes: On Steam, around 250,000 players are already online at the same time – even though you can currently only get into the game with the Digital Premium Edition, which costs 100 euros.

From 6 September 2023, all owners of the Standard Edition and Game Pass subscribers will also be able to play the game. No wonder, then, that most games give the current release week a wide berth. But there are also brave exceptions that want to take up the challenge. Which ones are we present to you in our weekly new game releases.

Highlight of the week: Synced

(Genre: Multiplayer Shooter – Developer: Next Studios – Release: September 8 (Steam))

The Free2Play-Shooter Synced offers two different game modes: In co-op you start with up to two friends, in which you have to search for loot, complete mission objectives and destroy heaps of NPC enemies in the best Roguelike manner.

The PvP mode is similar, except that you’ll also have to deal with enemy players. The team that has collected the most points at the end wins. It doesn’t sound spectacular at first, but Synced has a cool idea anyway.

Each player brings his own companion into the games, which he can order around at will and equip with various talents.

Other Releases of the Week

Tuesday, 5 September

  • (Rune Factory 3 Special): The mixture of role-playing game and farm sim à la Stardew Valley originally appeared in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. Almost 14 years later, you can now play a revised version with better graphics and new content on the PC.

    Wednesday, 6 September

    • (Chillquarium): Here you take care of an aquarium in which you breed fish in a very chilled way. You can then sell them and use the money you earn to open loot packs that can contain even more valuable fish.

      Thursday, 7 September

      • (The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo): A rather whimsical adventure game in which your character Mr. Cook is torn to pieces. The hand-drawn look is definitely worth seeing, though.

      • (Void Crew (Early Access): If Starfield isn’t for you, but you’re still into space, you can save humanity in the best FTL style in Void Crew.

      • (Pool Cleaning Simulator (Early Access): Controversial publisher PlayWay has you fixing, building or cleaning things all the time. This time you get to give rotten swimming pools a thorough makeover with a sponge and pressure washer.

        Friday, 8 September

        • (NBA 2K24): This year’s annual spin-off of the basketball simulation lets you replay the coolest performances of NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Otherwise, not too much should change compared to last year.

        • (Fae Farm): After Rune Factory 3 Special, another farm simulation awaits you this week. This one does without combat, but is set in a fantasy world where you can also use spells.

How’s it looking? Is it all Starfield for you this week? Are you still busy with Baldur’s Gate 3? Are you waiting for the jam-packed autumn of games, with games like Manor Lords, Cities: Skylines 2 and Payday 3 awaiting you? Or are you excited about one of the games shown here?
