The Thaumaturge, newly announced on Steam, could be just the role-playing game for all fans of Disco Elysium.

A unique setting in detailed isoperspective and a deep story with real and emotional decisions: These were the virtues in 2019 that earned Disco Elysium numerous awards and even the first place on our list of the 100 best story games of all time!

Now announced on Steam, The Thaumaturge seems to be pushing the exact same buttons as the role-playing game about the crazy disco cop once did – just with a completely different theme.

What is The Thaumaturge?

The title The Thaumaturge doesn”t exactly roll off the tongue smoothly, but its exciting premise does: In early 20th century Warsaw under the rule of the Russian Tsarist Empire, the world is in conflict. Russian soldiers, Jewish merchants, Polish citizens and many more people each have their own values and interests that are not always compatible.

Wealth and dark abysses lie close together: “The noble banquet of high society can quickly be followed by a robbery in a dark alley of the Praga district,” reads the Steam description.

At the same time, the world is populated by the Salutors – eerie and supernatural beings that could come straight out of a nightmare. We are supposed to play a so-called Thaumaturge who can understand and tame Salutors. So they can even be used in combat and influence the deepest inside of other people.

Our Thaumaturge is meant to be entirely influenced by our own character creation and choices, and thus play out in very different ways – just as we know from the different personalities of our Disco Elysium cop. Decisions and far-reaching consequences are also to play an essential role.

The biggest difference to Disco Elysium, however, might be that fights will play a much bigger role together with the tamed Salutors.

The Thaumaturge is being developed by Fool”s Theory, who previously launched the cyberpunk sneaking game Seven, and will be released under the publisher 11 bit studios, which already has gaming gems such as Frostpunk, This War of Mine or Children of Morta under their auspices.

The Thaumaturge does not have a release date yet – but if you are curious, you can already put the game on your wishlist at (Steam).
