Amazon takes a stand after reports about defective graphics cards by New World and plays a patch. The manufacturer, meanwhile, promises refunds.

Update 25 July 2021: Good news for all those whose graphics card has gone bad in New World! EVGA, the manufacturer of the affected models, has announced that all defective GPUs will be replaced. Previously, reports had accumulated that RTX 3090s in particular were damaged during the MMO beta – Amazon has now applied a patch that will hopefully fix the cause. Amazon: “It’s safe to play New World “

Amazon was quick to comment on the issue with the defective RTX 3090s. A tweet from the New World Twitter channel @playnewworld said that players had already spent millions of hours in the closed beta. It said that analysis of the data had uncovered “no signs of widespread issues with Nvidia’s top-of-the-line model. “

New World is safe to play, the tweet continues. Nevertheless, a patch was announced and has been applied in the meantime. This limits the frame rate in the MMO’s menu. Hardware expert Nils sees the reaction with mixed feelings – for him, Amazon should take more responsibility.

We took a quick look and can at least confirm that the utilisation of our RTX 3090 Founders Edition in the settings is now only between 55 and 60 percent. Previously, it was up to 95 percent, which drove the temperature up rapidly. In the game itself, however, we could not prove the problems described by some Reddit users – this is still true now.

Original news from 21 July: The closed beta of Amazon’s long-awaited MMO game New World started on 20 July. Since then, there have been more and more reports about defective or overheated graphics cards. The RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 FTW models from EVGA seem to be particularly affected.

New World allegedly damages graphics card

So reports user “greyone78″ via Reddit:

“I just wrecked a 3090 on the main menu after setting my graphics quality to medium and hitting save. Can’t believe it. Has anyone else had such a catastrophic failure? I’ve been playing Cyberpunk [with the] 3090 on Ultra for months, so this really makes no sense.

Is anyone else joining the RMA club?”

User “ipoptires” responds as follows:

“Well. I think this just happened to me. The display went off while I was in the queue. Now I can’t turn the display on. But the GPU fans are running at maximum for some reason when I turn on my PC.

Edit: It’s an EVGA 3090 FTW3”

Other users report similar problems: The graphics card no longer outputs an image after a reset. Many users are now planning to send in their accelerator and demand a refund. Meanwhile, the content of the MMO’s closed beta is receiving praise and criticism in equal measure. But the rush of players is enormous

It doesn’t always have to be total failures

It doesn’t always seem to be total failures, though. Often the game apparently only crashes or causes an unusually high load and heat development of the graphics card. For example, user “Drakaris” writes:

“In New World, GPU/CPU not only go crazy in the menu, in the game it’s even worse. My GPU reached over 80 degrees (after forcing all 3 fans to 100%, the first time I’ve done that since undervolting) and the CPU over 85 degrees.

I have no idea how this is even possible, I don’t even reach these temperatures on synthetic benchmarks and 7-8 hour stress test loops. Limiting the FPS to 60 helps a little but not much, plus I really didn’t spend a small fortune so I can play at 60… “

Problems partially confirmed in self-test

We can partially recreate the problems with our RTX 3090 Founders Edition. In the menu, the utilisation of the graphics card is permanently in the range between 93 and 95 percent, at a clock rate of 1,890 MHz. After a few minutes, the temperature is already 67 degrees and rising.

Grafikkarte und Prozessor werden auf unserem Testsystem nicht übermäßig belastet. Die CPU könnte kühler sein, wir verwenden allerdings ein sehr leises Profil, weshalb die Temperaturen etwas höher ausfallen.

However, we don’t have any problems in the game itself. The temperature doesn’t rise above 64 degrees during our short play in UWQHD resolution (3,440 x 1,440 pixels) including maximum details, we can’t detect any crashes or unusually high utilisation of the graphics card.

Have you had any experiences with New World? Do you have any problems with the graphics card? Feel free to post it in the comments!
