United 1944 takes on a classic scenario of multiplayer shooters, but also wants to experiment with elements of other genres.

World War II shooters have become quite common. Even Battlefield and Call of Duty have visited the battlefields of the Second World War in recent years. United 1944 also sends you into the same era, as the name suggests. However, the multiplayer shooter dares to do something unusual.

What is United 1944?

The first-person shooter comes from the developer Novarama, who previously published the twin-stick shooter Killsquad and the action game Samurai Jack. So United 1944 is definitely new territory. We probably don”t have to expect a polished blockbuster, but rather the title of a smaller studio.

But how does the shooter actually work? In the trailer above we can already see some features that were explained in more detail by the developers:

  • Large-scale battles: Like a Battlefield, United wants you to fight for control of outposts on large, fully walkable maps. However, the team size is only 16 players.
  • More tactical gameplay: In the first trailer United makes a more tactical impression than shooters like Battlefield or CoD. As a team, we have to defend our headquarters at all times, but also build outposts, fortify them and hold them. To build a new outpost, however, we first have to secure documents hidden on the map.

  • Learning new skills: In each match we can unlock new skills, gadgets and weapons via a skill tree. This is not permanent progress, we only ever get our skills for the duration of a round.
  • Survival mechanics: But we don”t just get our weapons and equipment handed to us. Instead, we have to collect resources and craft them from them. The materials to fortify an outpost must also be collected first.

When we will be able to try out the World War II shooter for ourselves on Steam has not yet been announced. However, there should be news of a beta phase soon.

How do you like the first look at United 1944? Would you try out the more unusual shooter? Or do you already have enough games in a world war scenario and prefer to play Battlefield 5 or Company of Heroes? Let us know in the comments!
