Former Bioware general manager Aaryn Flynn’s new studio is working on an imaginative survival game with different worlds.

At the Game Awards, the new development studio Inflexion Games unveiled their first work Nightingale directly with a trailer and in it we could already spy some exciting things. Not only the surprisingly detailed visuals, but also the creative monster designs amazed us. You can watch the trailer here:

In fact, there are some real industry veterans behind the open-world survival game, many of whom once earned their bread and butter at the role-playing game experts of Bioware. No wonder, after all, the team is led by Arryn Flynn. Flynn was part of Bioware from 2000 to 2017 and even held a leadership position as general manager in between.

But what is behind the veteran game?

What kind of game is Nightingale?

From PR and developers, Nightingale is described as a shared world survival crafting game. So anyone who was expecting a new solo RPG from former Bioware people is now probably looking a bit gloomy out of the wash. In fact, Nightingale is much more of a Valheim-branded game, only instead of Norse mythology, the world relies on a 19th century version full of fantasy and style.

Should mean: Here fantastic creatures or monsters meet elegant skirts, revolvers and gas lamps. According to studio CEO Arryn Flynn, the team worked very long and hard on the world of Nightingale. The result is not just one open world, but several of them, which players can travel through magical portals.

The following gameplay features are planned:

  • Exploration: In Nightingale we are to be allowed to explore the different realms, which consist of forests, swamps and deserts. The main objective is to restore portals. Survival is also supposed to play a role. However, it is not yet known how far the system extends.
  • Building and Crafting: To survive in a magical world full of monsters, you obviously need more than just a little food. That’s why you should also be able to build shelters. As can be seen in the trailer, entire towns can be built – or destroyed by monsters. Weapons can also be crafted. In addition to shooting irons, melee weapons are also an option here.
  • Multiplayer: Nightingale is primarily a multiplayer game with a shared world. This means an environment that many players share with each other like in an MMO. However, it should also be possible for soloists to fight their way through on their own.
Entire villages can be built in Nightingale, but of course it's faster in a group.

Is this still Indie?

Multiple open game worlds? A team of gaming veterans? And such a superbly produced trailer with impressive in-game graphics? That sounds like almost too much for such a new studio. But Inflexion Games does have a very solid underpinning. The studio belongs to the British technology company Improbable, is supported accordingly and, in addition, the Chinese publishing giant Tencent is still on deck as a partner.

Nightingale does not yet have a concrete release date. However, they would like to go into Early Access in 2022. It is not known how long this will last.
