The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is coming as a new game based on the dystopian spin-off The Last Ronin. It”s said to be reminiscent of God of War.

The Turtles are fun, sassy and kid-friendly. At least most of the time. The dark spin-off The Last Ronin strikes completely different notes. And that very comic is getting a video game adaptation.

As Doug Rosen of rights holder Paramount told (Polygon) the game is being made by an unnamed development studio. It is to be an action role-playing game with gameplay inspired by God of War.

Not much more is known about the new TMNT game, not even an approximate release date. Rosen assumes, however, that it will take a few more years

Dark, bloody, adult

If you want to experience the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin comic template completely uninformed, better read no further at this point. Here are some light spoilers about the story of the comic so that those who are interested can get a rough idea of what the upcoming game will be like.

The Last Ronin is set in a dystopian future where New York has degenerated into a sinister juggernaut. The Turtles as a troupe no longer exist. Only one of the four Ninja Turtles survived, the rest (including Master Splinter) were killed by Shredder”s Foot Clan.

The surviving Turtle is old, bitter and bent on bloody revenge. Which of the four mutated turtles is involved remains open in the first volume until the very end. The character uses all four weapons, including those of his dead friends, i.e. nunchaku, Bō, two sai and two katana.

What could the game look like?

The new TMNT game is set in this unusual, gloomy, adult scenario. If we take God of War as a starting point, we can easily imagine an action role-playing game in which players fight their way through the ranks of the Foot Clan and regularly engage in high-impact boss fights. Or something like that.
